I bet that caught your attention, didn't it?

Well, I wanna know if Orcon will produce one of these plans? As much as I love fast internet, I also have a budget being a student, one of which I can't go over, and I'm finding it hard to stick to my 25gb, being spoiled with the Telecom BigTime plan.

What I want to know is if the idea of having a choice as to what happens when you reach your limit, is being/will be explored?

1. Go to dial up speeds at NO extra cost.
2. Pay $2 per gb there after at fullspeed.

XNet do this, and you only end up paying for what you use. Also the GB price is about $1 per GB

No disconnection fee or contract term with Xnet that I can see on their site.

If I remember correctly they had to bring one in for a short while when Chorus/Telecom wholesale were charging ISP's for disconnections but I thought they got rid of it straight away after Chorus/Telecom wholesale got rid of that policy.

Snap also have a range of plans that come with a base GB amount, then capped or you can buy $2 per GB after that (or buy larger data packs), also a nice $5 for 3 nights (1am-7am) free off peak addon.

Last time i checked with them, they had a 12 month contract.

Also, believe it or not, they are actually at least $15 more expensive than Orcon. Which is clearly a no no for me. I would much rather be checking my usage meter every 10 seconds than to have to spend another $15-25 more.

May as well just add more data to my plan if I were to do that.

Edited my post to above to mention Snap.

Most ISP's are more expensive for large usage than Orcon or Slingshot... it's often a case of you get what you pay for.

Are you willing to go for naked adsl + voip or want to stick with land line + standard adsl?

Yeah, true.

but my post above still applies.

I'm on Naked DSL, so my cost every month for 25Gb of data is $80. Not ideal, but with that I get no contract.

I don't need a home line. Though, if the extra cost came to $15 (a month) and I didn't have to supply my own ata adapter or phone, then I would consider VOIP, since my step dad said he would pay for it.

But I WON'T give up my no contract deal.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

When I signed up to xnet, they didn't have contracts. However I believe new cusomters they now do, but almost every other ISP also has contracts. FOr my requirements I found xnet to be cheaper.

If you want a connection that craps out at a low fixed amount, then vodafone are what you want since that is all they offer.

There's Vodafone Naked
$65 for 30GB if you have an on account mobile with vodafone
$95 for 30GB is you don't have on account mobile with them

http://www.vodafone.co.nz/naked-broadband/index.jsp

Capped to 64kbit when you hit the the limit

However...
They don't really have a sensible way to add more data, double your data is a stupid idea.. what if you want to use 40 or 50GB instead of 60GB (stupid system).

What if you want 200 gig? (Not unreasonable) - no can do.

IMO orcon have it right. A connection that stops working mid month is a stupid idea.

Some people are on a budget though.  Xnet have the right idea, where you can set your limit yourself.  Pay for what you use and throttled after the limit you set.

Yeah Orcon and Xnet have better terms (no contract) and flexible data usage and are cheaper but then.... the peak time performance is sub par compared to Telecom, Telstra, Maxnet, Actrix and probably Snap.

They (Orcon) used to have an no shock plan called Zero Shock unfortunatly if you went over 20GB a month you'd get an email saying naughty boy if you continue to do so we'll move you to another plan blah blah blah but they haven't had that plan for yonks now

what about actrix, theve won a bunch of awards. basicly they give you XMB per day when you hit that they slow you down, or you can go per month and they slow you down.

I dont see any mention of 12 month contracts tho didnt look hard
