The other day a friend sent me an MMS.  I wasn't able to receive it as I didn't have the right settings.  I went to the 2degrees SIM menu and chose "Get Settings" which sent some settings to my phone and that enabled me to receive her message.  Great!

I was checking my usage on "Your 2degrees" and noticed I had been charged a small amount of data for receiving the MMS (Usage type = GPRS, 0.08MB = $0.04).  I thought perhaps the settings sent were incorrect (they were called 2degrees WAP) and the internet one didn't seem to work so I thought I'd try and enter them manually but I ran into a problem, I didn't know what to put where!

I'm using a Nokia 6500s in GSM mode (I forget why, I either had issues with UMTS or worse battery life or something.  Is it worth switching from GSM given I don't really use data on my phone?

Anyway, back to the issue at hand...

I was able to set up the internet settings:

2degrees settings (from webpage):
Internet Settings
Homepage:  http://m.2degreesmobile.co.nz/
APN:  internet
Nokia settings (on my phone):
Web settings
Homepage:  http://m.2degreesmobile.co.nz/
User name/Password: blank
Access point proxy: Disabled
Data bearer: Packet data
Packet Data Access Point: internet
Network Type: IPv4
Authentication: Normal

However, I can't figure out where all the settings go for the MMS stuff.

2degrees settings (from webpage):
MMS Settings
WAP Gateway Port (WAP2): 8080
WAP Gateway Port (WAP1): 9201
WAP gateway IP: 118.148.1.118
Homepage: http://mms.2degreesmobile.net.nz:48090
APN: mms
Nokia settings (on my phone):
Multimedia msg. settings
Server address: Is this the homepage or the WAP gateway IP (and what about the ports?)
Access Point Proxy: ? Is this enabled and then...
Proxy Address:
Proxy Port: Are the WAP Gateway IP and Port? (which one)
Packet Data Access Point: mms (seems obvious?)
Network Type: IPv4
Authentication: Normal

I tried a bunch of different things and tried to send myself an MMS but they never worked, it just kept sending.  Now I have a bunch more data charges (although they could have been from when I was testing if the internet worked, I guess).  I just need to know how the settings given on the website map to the Nokia settings.

Also, if this is correct will I no longer be charged for data on sending/receiving MMS?  I thought this might have been because the settings I got sent used a different APN or something?

Hi,
Based on what you have said it sounds like you have 2 degrees WAP configured as the default access point for MMS. I know this does allow you to receive MMS from 2 degrees but not to send. I assume because this would mean you are not using the default MMS server you would be charged for Data Download.

The first thing I would do is go to Messaging/ Settings/ Multi Media/ and check the access point in use. If it is 2 degrees WAP see if there is something called 2 degrees MMS and select it. I would have thought you would have received this setting when you requested through the Sim.

If it is not there I would have another go and getting the MMS settings sent to you . I would however do it through the website and request only the MMS settings. This should work. Check again that the setting has been applied.

If you are entering the settings manually ensure the the setting are for Multimedia Message and not for web and ensure that you activate the settings.

I don't have my Nokia 3120c to go through the settings but can probably check and post the setting tommorrow if you are still having a problem.

That sounds about right. I only got the intenet access point and wap settings sent. I'll check out their website and try from there, but really I just want to know which of the settings given on the website go which which setting on the Nokia. I've listed all the options.

I don't like that you can't see the settings that you are sent, they are just saved and you can't see what teh configuration is. I like the idea of inputting the settings myself.

Hello again.

You might also like to look at this page as this is how I worked it http://mea.nokia.com/support/product-support/nokia-3120-classic/telkom-manual-configuration. You will have to make the appropiate modifications to enter the 2 degrees settings and obvoiusly acitivate the MMS setting rather then the WAP. Should work for any Seires 40 phone. I think server adress and home page are the same everything else should be self explanatory.

Thanks for the help. That website seems to clear things up. Perhaps the only mistake I made was the wrong port (how do you know which to use?).

Anyway, in the meantime I sent myself the settings from the website and successfully sent myself and received an MMS. I've been charged 50c for the MMS, but no data charges on it as yet. If that's the case, then I'm happy. I'd like to enter the details manually just for my sake but it seems to work properly now, so I probably won't bother.
