I have been experiencing lag issue with online games every night over the last 3 months, to an extent where it is unplayable. I have had a chat with CSRs from orcon, they informed me that they've changed my profile and even replaced my modem. I have no idea why they would want to change a perfectly fine modem when I have told them that the lag only happens at NIGHT!

I am on a Gold+ account which I believe should not have a speed cap.

Has anyone been experiencing lag with online games with orcon? If yes what have you done to solve the problem?

Also if I were to terminate my broadband/landline with orcon. Which is a good isp for gaming? Is there anything I have to watch out for when I quit Orcon?

Any help is appreciated.

A few years ago I couldn't play AoC in the evenings, the lag was so bad I couldn't even log in, after spending many hours on the phone with a CSR, I was told it was an issue with the game servers and nothing to do with Orcon so the ticket was closed. The next week switched to Telstra and the problem was gone.

Fast forward to now I'm back with Orcon and playing Aion. In the evenings pings jump all over the place, often its not to noticeable but some nights its not even worth playing.

Pings to my vent server also turn to crap in the evenings.

For switching ISPs I wait until half way through the billing cycle to sign up with a new ISP. The new ISP seems deals with everything, so once your cut over Orcon should know to shut off your account. It pays to call just in case, but every time Ive done it the CSR has been aware of the cancellation.

In the past I've found Telstra pretty good for gaming, although they have a few issues with some gaming servers in Aussie.

Have you run some sort of traceroute type program (Matt's Traceroute is great) to record performance while you play? You can pretty easily help to diagnose where congestion issues are doing it.

Get some solid logs, take them back to Orcon (assuming that the fault appears to lie within their network) and ask them for assistance.

Audiophiles are such twits! They buy such pointless stuff: Gold plated cables, $2000 power cords. Idiots.

OOOHHHH HYPERFIBRE!

/me creeps in ...

Sounds like what I had with WoW and other games on Orcon.  Plus general web type usage.

Anyway, yes, after being asked to do isloation tests and trace routes and pings and Orcon tele-support sheet magicwhizzbangs for far too long (and seemingly a stall tactic to get as much $$$ as possible with zero return and support), the solution was easy ----> Telecom Xtra for me. Pro Plan.  Still humming along perfectly fine night after night, games and all.  BOOYAH.  ADSL2+ as it's MEANT to be!

Though a very helpful and useful suggestion, I'd be surprised if this even helps with their standard 0800 service.  You're response would be "can you run an isolation test and then run our magic tool".  Followed up a week or two later with the exact same request.

But ignore me and try it anyway. Who knows.  You may get lucky :)
