Just realised my 2degrees SIM wasn't in my spare handset and is now refusing to register on the network. I'd taken it out for a UK trip and forgot to put it back. Hence I never realised it must have been due to expire. I take it I can't revive it and will need to pickup a new SIM card.

No, if it won't register on the network it's been deleted from the IN & HLR already: new SIM required.

From memory the numbers are quarantined for 6 months.

But with a bit of fast talking you MIGHT be able to convince someone at care to give it back to you. Note that that does not apply to ported numbers: they are released immediately to the LSP when the account is killed in our network.

EDIT: You'd still have to buy a new SIM though.

Thats a bit slack since you know if they are or are not being used, so that the sms would not be recieved, and that there is no way to determine expiration thru the my 2 degrees portal.

I agree, terribly slack.

They should also ring you and warn you that the SIM is about to expire just in case the email didn't go through. Wink

Mmm, well, that's as may be, and I do see your point, but it's the IN (i.e. telco-universe) that knows about account expiries and sends out the SMS. Telco systems don't typically do email.

Given that the overwhelming majority of accounts about to expire are definitely not going to be used again, there's little or no business benefit in doing a lot of work to hook up with an email notification that's only going to be ignored (if indeed there is an email address for the account in the first place).

You could also argue that it's a bit slack of the customer to not top them up if they really want to keep them. It's not like you don't know up front they expire in a year, now is it?

When you cant get the date of expiration to top up a sim you have no intention of making calls on if there is a zero balance on it, it is a bit hard to know when you have to top up to stop it dying. unless I record every top up and put a reminder in outlook to top up again its very easy to not know its going to expire.

Also, the sim I put in a while back to check the balance that has now expired (0220richms) got no text when I put it in at that time - was the day that all the ISPs broke so not that long ago (2 weeks perhaps) and would defiantly be in the timeframe that it should be getting warned that it was going to expire.

Well then I guess I have to suggest the same remedy: top up. If the number isn't worth topping up to keep active, then, well, don't. There's really nothing better I can tell you.

Keeping numbers in the system costs a lot of money in license fees, and as I said, almost none of them that actually get to the point of expiry are ever used again after the last topup. It's just not good business sense to do other than assume that if you don't bother leaving it in a phone that's switched on, you don't really care much about it.

So: if they still register on the network, top them up. If they don't, go buy a new SIM and try to convince someone in customer care to let you have your old number back. Sorry!

There is no business case for mobile operators to keep alive customers who have $0 on their card, they are looking at the active customers. It's only $5 a sim, I do not need to say any more... @%!@
