I am with Slingshot and today our line has been constantly dropping.
Rang them and they said it was a problem in the South Island.
Any ideas what has happened?

They are hopeless isp
I would not recommend them to anyone

I'm with slingshot in the South Island (Dunedin), and have just had an outage from about 7.15pm - 8.20pm tonight [25/10/2010].

My modem was syncing with the cabinet, but it just wasn't connecting to the internet.

Ridiculous timing! I have been having sync problems over the past couple of days, been trying a few different modems. I tried another modem this evening and wrote it off as being faulty because it claimed to have PPP but wouldnt connect me to the net - looks like I shouldnt have blamed the modem!

I am with slingshot and broadband has been having outages for the last few days (Wanaka based) I am about to vote with my feet. Really fed up with the lousy service slingshot offers - slow speeds and no helpline unless you have an afternoon free. I have been with them for 4 years now but enough's enough!

Same problem here,am in Christchurch and have experienced several outages over the past few days,I did however get very fast download speeds of up to 600kbs from about 8pm till 9pm tonight before the network dropped again,I agree with everyone else though,the download speeds are terrible,no better than dial up half the time,even a Slingshot tech informed me that although p2p would be slightly slower than normal for it to be this slow I imagine it wont be too long before we see Slingshot on the Headline News or even another showing on Fair Go

They did have a message on their faults line tonight which was a first which explained they were having problems with the canterbury area but once again,in fact twice the network has dropped again since,the bad thing is that after 10pm there is no-one there to answer youre queries or to log a fault,what say you have a business running 24/7,what then do these customers do in times of no network such as these,I would say that there are tech's working on the problem,I cant imagine the uproar if the network was offline overnight

You wouldn't be with a standard Slingshot home ADSL connection if you had a business. You pay more for a more reliable connection, 24/7 support etc.

What you have us a best effort service but it does sound prety lousy.. Might want to change, maybe Snap - they are Christchurch based.

This is just ridiculous. Its been dropping out for over 40 hours for me, ranging from 5mins to 2 hours at a time. You've got to wonder if they are even trying to fix it, or waiting for a tech to come back from the long weekend

It Could be The After Shock that broke some wires
This aftershock occurred at 3.13 pm on Sunday 24th October at a magnitude of 4.78

most of the problems have been happening since the 4.8 aftershock but they have been having issues with the south island in general for a while now,up this saga is a bit like the Telecom XT episode,it took a while but they sorted it out question will be I think are customers going to make an issue about paying for a service they cant recieve

Im doubtful that an aftershock caused it, something as critical as south island dsl should be on fibre, (but it is slingshot...), which is pretty flexible, and no other ISPs are having problems

My Slingshot connection has been dodgy for at least a month now. ADSL connection light stays lit on the modem, PPP light keeps dropping out though, usually just for a few minutes though. Last night I was online gaming about 9.15pm and it went out. Looked up here and yep there was an earthquake just down the road at the time, I live in Shirley, Christchurch.
Called Slingshot today - it's been down ever since - and was given the speech about how it was caused by the earthquakes and they were working hard to blah blah blah.

I wonder though, if the line was affected by earthquakes, should I still be getting the ADSL light on my modem? Surely that would go out as well at the PPP light. Anyone able to shed some light on this? I'm no expert but I thought the ADSL light shows you have a connection to the exchange, and PPP is more of a password/authentication thing?

Sending this now over 3G, still no Slingshot :(

if slingshot are not going to fix it then ask your friends who are on telecom broadband in the same area as you if they are having the same problem and if they are not, call slingshot and tell them your cancelling your account unless they fix the problems.

Finally today in the later part of the afternoon Slingshots problems seem to have been resolved,I cant imagine the amount of flack they must have taken over the long weekend but with the amount of complaints they have been receiving to date I would imagine they may have pulled their socks up a tad,only time will tell,my download speeds are exellent since the network reconnected this afternoon but again time will tell

It wasnt slingshots network.

Aftershock damage I was told.
It was telecoms equipment damaged in Christchurch, hence Chorus was fixing it.
