Hey guys,
Orcon fibre at our new office went live today. It's a 10mbps connection provided over the Telstra Wholesale fibre network. We are in Auckland. Interestingly the 10mbps is only on downlink and our uplink is very high (which is perfect for our business). This is costing us around $1100 a month including 20GB of international.

That 10 Mbps limit on fibre makes it nonsense, really... Ok to have good uploads, but the download?

This is what I am getting right now on my TelstraClear cable:

It's a 100mbps port (Telstra have a switch in the building so we just run a cat5e cable to it). I'm guessing its rate limited based on what we pay, ie if we wanted to get 100mbps it would probably be another 1k or something which is too expensive.

We get unlimited domestic for that price though remember.

I would say they are a hosting company, so the download isn't that important.

While we do host a bunch of cloud computing applications these are all from server based at ICONZ datacenter (may move to Orcon). We move 2-3 TB of data to these servers from our office on a monthly basis hence why having such high upload is good.

We're on 10Mbps port as well, but with Citylink. Bursts to 12Mbps, unlimited international. We pay close to that.

Oh really? Who provides the ISP services? Unlimited 10mbps international !!! That would cost us a couple of thousand alone TBH?!

Most would be POA but Xtreme have publicly listed pricing
http://www.xtreme.net.nz/connections/citylink-pricing.php

Only really useful if you have an office or building in Wellington that is connect-able via the CityLink network though.

Same here, but our SIP is still with WorldXchange (our previous supplier).

On that note, our company also provides SaaS-based apps, but we used Orcon as DR site (primary still ICONZ). We recently switched from Orcon to Maxnet because of service and costs. 3x 1Us at Orcon was costing us the same as a half-rack at Maxnet/ICONZ (21U). Our requests to Orcon to revise the pricing went unheard for over 6 months.

Then on the day I went to remove the servers they decided to check with me if there was still a chance I'd stay if they improve the prices. I laughed at the guy.

Oh really? What exactly were the price differences? ICONZ seems really pricey - our account manager has quoted $130 per month per 1u.

Orcon pricing was something like $700 for a half cabinet per month. I would prefer to go to Orcon as we can consolidate international and get better scaling on it.

I hate to bag on ICONZ, but on all the quotes I've had from them in the past, they've been far more expensive then the next cheaper option.
