Just wondering if these speeds look correct for the line noise etc ?

Flatmate has been trying to get Orcon to sort out our ADSL2 speeds but they keep closing the ticket.

Hi, the noise margin of 12dB is the correct answer, however the speed of 6.6Mb/s for 28dB attenuation is big fail you should be looking at more like 12-15Mb/s.

I assume this is a Orcon connection via Telecom Wholesale (ie on Telecom gear) rather than on the Purple network (Orcon+ plans).

Do an isolation test, remove all phones from their sockets including fax machines, sky boxs (if connect to phone) everything so the only thing across the line is the modem, what do you get then.

I would suggest that its more likely there are lots of phone sockets all over the place and wiring all in poor shape, hence bad speed.

yeah sync rates should be better considering your attenuation. if you have already escalated to orcon they would have already changed your profile round a bit. so i would bet money on your modem.

i found a couple of modems out there that even though they say they are ADSL2+. they arn't. or if they are they are not compatible with orcons adsl2+ equipment.

(assuming you are on their LLU network)

My guess is wiring, been using two linksys modems which I know worked fine at my last place.
Unplugging the phone made no difference and trying the modem with a different jack in another room made it slightly worse.

my advice to you would be to try a NON linksys adsl2+ compatible router and see if you get the same/similar sync rates.

not that there is anything wrong with linksys routers, they are fantastic. It's just that orcons network seems to have issues with linksys modems. (they may have fixed this by now) but i know they used to.

Get them to send you one of the free single ports or homehubs, and see if you get any better sync rates. If you don't you can pretty much certainly say the wiring in your house needs to be looked at, or you need a splitter installed.

hit up your landlord with the bill, lol.
