I've just moved to Snap from TCL and am having some weird page loading lag.

When I enter a URL or click bookmark on any of my computers there is about a 1 - 2 sec delay before the page starts loading.

I thought it was DNS but I'm not 100% sure.

My average DNS times from dig are between 55 - 80 msec, compared with a friend who is also on snap and gets around 4-10 msec resolve times.

My attenuation down is 11-12.
I am getting a 13Mbit connection.
The exchange is about 250 meters away.
I have had my house freshly re-wired and we have no telephones (naked DSL).
I've tried several ADSL2+ modems.
I've bypassed my PFsense router and plugged the modem directly into computers.
My DNS servers are set to the default 202.37.101.1 & .2

It's really frustrating!

What sort of result does running http://code.google.com/p/namebench/ to compare the Snap DNS servers to others show?

*slight correction I'm about 400M away from the exchange, connecting at 15mbit, but benchmarking at 13.

Hmm did you have interleaving off on Telstraclear, maybe defaulted to on when you moved to Snap.

Check the modem stats in the admin ui, normally called "ADSL Mode" with value of Fast (Interleaving off) or Interleaved (On)

Interleaving is a "legacy" error correction system that increases latency quite a lot.

It's a setting on the ADSL profile for the port you're connected to, so you probably need to ring the helpdesk to get it turned off.

Sorry, I should have said that I was on TCL cable, not ADSL.

When I joined snap, I chose to have interleaving turned off.

detailed information:

According to a friend, Trellis is not on, it's a Dynalink bug. (for ex I can ping snap.net.nz and get 6-7ms)

Certainly sounds like an odd issue, checked ping and tracert to their primary dns server for any weirdness?

tracert bender.snap.net.nz

ping bender.snap.net.nz -t

Also try lowering the the MTU in the modem/router to 1478 instead of 1500 see if there is any difference.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

The lag is still there (maybe not quite as bad?).

I have noticed that right now, trademe.co.nz, stuff.co.nz and tvnz.co.nz all load a LOT quicker.

There is still about 2-3 seconds *before* sites like slashot, reddit or Wikiledia load.

Hmm try with Firefox + Firebug (addon), goto one of the problem sites then activate Firebug and the Net panel, then refresh the page.

This will give you a graph/tree of all the http requests and their duration, mousing over individual bars will show you stats for each request.

Might help identify the issue (probably routing to a CDN used by advertisers or facebook like etc).

Example: Slashdot home page
http://iforce.co.nz/i/jrbk4ubb.jpg

650KB page weight 40+ http requests is pretty shocking, look at all those third party junk http requests.

Funny thing:

http://fishnhunt.co.nz/

Loads instantly.
But...
Going to their forums...

http://www.fishnhunt.co.nz/forum/YaBB.cgi

Takes almost a full minute to load!

Fixed it!!!

We entered a friends login/pw details in my ADSL modem and bang! the lag was gone!

So, I called up snap just now, they were very helpful (thanks John!)
First he tried another static IP in the same range, I had the same issues,
Moved me to another range and all is well!

How very odd.

Good it got solved in the end but alarming they have a whole ip range that (probably) that causes big delays on http requests.
