I've got an unlock ZTE MF627 data stick that i've been trying to use with 2degrees.
In the past I've used this on Vodafone and had no issues getting getting a 3g signal but with 2degrees the best I can get is EDGE.

I'm in Auckland and the modem is capable of 2100 MHZ 3G and 900 MHz 2g/Edge. An ideas why I'm only getting EDGE.

Sounds like you are in 3G 2100mhz Blackspot for 2degrees

EDGE works over the 900mhz band so the coverage foot print will be stronger

2degrees do not mirror image Vodafone or TCNZ coverage foot print where 2degrees have there own cells

Johnr could be right - do you get 2degrees 3G on a handset in that same location?

Interestingly at home we did get 3g 2degrees but at the moment none of our phones are showing it.

I need to do a test in the office.
