In a few days my 24 month contract with vodafone should be coming to an end. I have just got a new Android phone (Samsung Galaxy 3/580/GT-I5800) and so will will be wanting some data. I have no desire to go on another fixed term contract, so I have decided to switch to 2degrees. (prepay or monthy, I haven't decided yet).

I will want to port my current number to 2degrees.

Basically, what I wish to know is how best to proceed with the switchover?

Thanks

Sign up. Wait for it to complete. Port your number. Easy!

Thanks.

Do I need to contact Vodafone to end my plan?

If so, should I do this before or after porting the number?

I am in the process of doing this now. Not waiting for my 2 year contract to end as it is cheaper for me to do it now that the termination fee is reasonable. Got my IDEOS in hand - nice phone.

If you had looked/searched in the forums you would have found examples of this, but here is what I am doing:

Got a 2degrees SIM and registered it ("Signed Up")

[Signing Up to Pay Monthly - this is what I am doing, but you don't need to]

Port number to 2degrees using their online tools.

Make sure you are definitely out of contract before porting as you don't want to get caught with a termination fee accidentally (quite a few people have been caught out). And VF will refund anything extra you have paid.

DON'T contact VF - 2degrees do all that. It just gets mucky if you contact them about it. Let 2degrees do it all. It's that easy.

Get your 2degrees SIM and register it now, wait until you're sure you are out of contact and them port.

Thank you all for your replies.

Final question. How can one be sure one is definitely out of contract?

Looking back through my emails, I recieved my first bill on 14th December 2008 - a couple of days after signing up. My billing cycle starts on the 11th of the month. Would I be correct in assuming that it will be safe to port any time after the 11th of this month?

Well, personally, after the port is finished, *I* would contact Vodafone. Just to be sure the account is terminated.

I'm sure I found mine in MyVodafone, but can't see it now when I look. Ring them and ask .

It has occurred to me how many of my friends have switched to 2degrees. I say good on you and contacting VF just to make sure is a must! Or you could do what I did and just accept the termination fee is the price you pay for freedom!

Just last night I realized at dinner that 4 of my female friends who all were in their early 20's all were on 2degrees or were about to switch. 12 months ago the same girls were complaining that I was on 2degrees and couldn't text me.

How things have changed in 12 months!

Porting TelstraClear (t.nz number) --> 2Talk lost service for upto 9 hours.

What's the deal with mobile t.nz --> 2deg, do you loose service for any time?

I've got a number of these coming up if it's possible to do without service disruption.

So went into the Vodafone store yesterday to find out what the status of my contract was. My contract ended in November, not december like I thought, so I'm well out of contract. I wanted to see if the people there would give any sort of reason to stay with Vodafone, but the didn't seem too interested -- their loss :p

So I grabbed a $5 sim card, popped it in my phone and registered. Decided to stick with pre-pay as I make very few text's or calls.

Started the number port process at about 1:50pm. I got a text at 5:13pm saying it was all done :D

It really WAS easy. Thanks 2degrees!

If you do it online you can do it whenever you like, although it will only draw manual attention in the event of an error during business hours.

ok, so I set up the new phone 'on account' then just log on to the web and request the churn.

the phone will get 'a number' when I set it up, then will loose that number and get the customers number after the churn - right?

Exactly,

But just wait until the Pay monthly conversion has fully completed before requesting the number port. Once the port is complete the 2degrees 022 number will be disabled.
