Slingshot to make ultra-fast broadband a reality for its customers

This week the government announced that Crown Fibre Holdings has concluded negotiations with two partner companies to begin the rollout of ultra-fast broadband (UFB), expected to deliver at least 30 Megabits per second (Mbps) Downstream / 10 Mbps Upstream and a 2.5 Mbps committed information rate, to customers in selected areas around New Zealand.

Slingshot CEO Mark Callander says UFB is a real investment in the future of New Zealand.  Finally, network constraints which have been such a bottleneck in the past will be removed meaning that Slingshot will be able to give customers more data at faster speeds and this will ultimately drive innovation in services.

“We’re very excited about being able to deliver ultra-fast broadband to Slingshot customers.  We know what our customers love; lots and lots of fast data – we’re the only ISP to offer our customers All You Can Eat Broadband and we will make sure that we are among the first to deliver services on the UFB network.

Slingshot already offers the best value broadband in a very competitive market and our services on the UFB network will be no exception.  For just $90 a month our customers will receive ultra-fast broadband with unlimited national data, WiFi access within the home, two high definition voice lines, unlimited national calling as well as lots of other great calling features included for free.  We will also be offering a range of other bundles starting at just $70 a month because we want to ensure we have something for everyone on the UFB network” says Callander.

Having already made a huge investment in NZ with the rollout of its unbundled network nationwide, thousands of customers are already enjoying the benefits of increased competition through Slingshot’s home line and broadband services.  This can now be extended further based on the government’s UFB network and associated partners.

“The launch of ultra-fast broadband from Slingshot will be great news for customers as it will give them access to a broadband experience which is currently unavailable.  It’ll enable our customers to stream HD movies, instantly share high resolution photos, back-up important files on their computer in a fraction of the time it takes today, enjoy crystal-clear digital voice calling and so much more”.

Slingshot expects to be able to offer services in selected areas as early as April 2011.

they're probably hoping that all the AYCE users are torrenting the same stuff and therefore will be leeching off each others connections once they all have 10mbps upstream...  the current xdsl doesnt go much over 1mbps so the pipe needs to be filled from elsewhere

Why has no-one commented on this snippet?

"For just $90 a month our customers will receive ultra-fast broadband with unlimited national data [snip]"

So, international sites not included for $90/month? or more likely International speed / caps staying similar to the level of performance offered today by Slingshot?

Interested to see if Slingshot is prepared to address this in the open.

Cheers - N

Ok, so my 3 meg dsl gives about 30kB/sec on torrents most of the evening and free offpeak period, so that makes the 30 meg connection give.... oh, 30kB/sec since thats all _ANYONE_ on them gets.

Thanks for reminding me to follow up with that guy from the commerce commission.

Huh, guy on the news said the lowest rate would be $40? I know northpower is bringing it out to us in northland before xmas but who or where do you get it, with your current ISP? This is confusing hope more details than that are released if not on here then on northpower website as to how its gonna work.

Oh No! Don't take my word for it... It's what I _SUSPECT_ will happen based on inconvenient factors like economics...

I would love to hear Slingshot's statement on how they will provision international bandwidth on a UFB plan - they are the only ones who can say.

Cheers - N

The guy on the news read out a wholesale price component. The $40 is what Slingshot would pay for a small part of the service - they need to add International and national backhaul, support, CLNE (maybe) and everything else that is needed to provide a retail BB service to customers.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but the final retail price will be NOTHING like $40.

(Oh, that excluded GST as well :-)

Cheers -- N

Hey Talkiet

Are you saying that Telecom will have a better plan for $90 per month?

do tell...

Had a quick look but havn't found any info about what Telecom are offering when it rolls out so i could have missed it

Its good that Slingshot are giving us an indication atleast of what to expect this early on

$90 a month is too much IMO. Thats the price range that makes some people stick with dialup and not adsl.

Absolutely I'm not saying that. I don't work in Telecom Retail and apart from projects I am specifically involved in I have no idea about upcoming Telecom Retail broadband plans any more than I have knowledge about future Orcon, VF or Slingshot plans.

Bear in mind it's been a couple of days since the initial wholesale indicative prices were given. In my mind, understanding what it takes to get a service and plan structure together - giving pricing and service details NOW, for a plan they don't see landing until sometime in 2011 is little more than crystal ball gazing.

I wouldn't believe _ANY_ ISP (Telecom Retail included) that came out with pricing now for UFB retail services - there are still too many unknowns.

Cheers - N

xDSL upstream can go upwards of 1mbit - you just need Annex M (ADSL2+), which no one has felt like offering yet.

@ talkiet - if you have to 'buy' international data in packs (say of 2/5/10GB) on top, you're probably still looking at a competitive rate compared with what is being offered by other providers. Let alone in the harder to reach rural field. I would hardly see VDSL (as a comparative urban landline service) being any more competitive.

Am I correct in believing this is the LTE service? Or was that a separate announcement?
