Just got my login back for the 2degrees website and see that the website lists a strange charge once a month

Usage Type - Charge type - Mins/MB - Charged units - Amount
GPRS DAT 0.00 1 $0.01
GPRS DAT 0.00 1 $0.01

It's not exactly a significant amount but I'm just curious as to what this 0mb $0.01 monthly charge is since my phone can't use data/web browser (blackberry without certificates).

2c per month * 12 = 24cents... 24 cents * 4m mobile phones...

This stuff isn't a new story, ppl have rounded cents off accounts in the past to collect a few extra penny's to spend at the pub.

I recall being told not to worry about a software bug in that caused $7 to be charged to accounts unless the customer rang up to complain. (I didn't worry about it.... I just quietly fixed it as it was causing a breach of dd rules in .nz).

Hi there Xor,

The Blackberry may be regularly polling online or some background process may be using the gprs connection which doesn't need to be explicitly given permission to use the GPRS connection in a Service book.

That aside though, we have the facility to disable the GPRS connection from this end. If you would like to PM me your details and I can have this organised. You can at a later stage request to have this re-enabled again IE purchase of a new phone.

Cheers

^MD

Go into the menu of the Blackberry " Options " under networks and you should be able to turn off mobile data. The Blackberry is a always online handset and the device does not use certs but " service books "

Might be under " Advanced options "

The end user can turn off data on the handset so 2D need to do nothing

I meant service books. Only thing I can select under Networks is funnily enough, a Network. Everything under Advanced options is either empty or already set to deny.

+1 - It just annoys me how service providers have to pickup the slack...

+1, why should a service provider have to provide any service when there's plenty of good public forums where people just be spoon fed.

...or as in this case, NOT provide a service that the customer (handset) is asking for... :-)
