I have a Rant about slingshot I am a first time poster here please move / delete / LolCat if this is in the wrong place.

2 days ago I noticed that my internet speed got automatically capped to to dialup speeds I become abit worried that I have already used my 25GB in only 2 weeks So I go and check my usage and I find that I have only used 12GB of my data allowance I find this rather strange so I attempt to call slingshot. I call and wait 25min until some one answers the phone I asked the person there if they understand what 0.33Mbps is in KB/s they couldn’t tell me so I told them its 41 KB/s just abit slower than dialup I told them that I have been capped down to dialup speed and that I have only used 12BG of my usage they check this and see this is true. They then send me on to the technical department I wait 2 hours before falling asleep and the cordless phone has gone flat. Next day that’s today I call up nice and early at 8am they are massively over loaded with calls and I wait another 30mins before I get some one. Again I explain my situation only for them to tell me that they can not do any thing about it so im on the phone once again waiting on the technical department 25min and counting

Any of you know about this kind of problem before?

Never actually used dialup yourself have you?

Hint, check your math.

The math is correct except dialup is 56 kilotBITS/sec not kiloBYTES/sec.

So if you were getting dialup speeds you would in fact be downloading at a maximum theoretical speed of 7 kiloBYTES/sec.

I recall someone posting previously that if you call the helpdesk from a mobile they will answer your call quicker. Maybe try that.

Sorry I wont be much technical help other than to say that everything I read about SS service is extremely bad. Well documented on GZ and recently in national papers...suggest you vote with your feet to another ISP perhaps?

Also annoyed at the pathetic nit-picking in this thread from some repliers which is of no help. I think a few people need to get their heads out of their tech books and learn some people skills instead.

Dialup is ~54kbit max, which is ~6KB/s.

So any way if you want to know what happened I am extremely tried right now because i have been waiting 2 and a half hours on the waiting cue for the slingshot technical department yes 2.5 HOURS! this is a new record for me. So what did they say?

They said its my modem My local modem is faulty and i need to replace it because of this

Pinging 192.168.2.1 with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 192.168.2.1: bytes=32 time=7ms TTL=64
Reply from 192.168.2.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64
Reply from 192.168.2.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64
Reply from 192.168.2.1: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=64

Ping statistics for 192.168.2.1:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 7ms, Average = 2ms

They said that because the first ping Reply is 7ms this means i must replace my modem btw this is a Belkin #5d7633au4a wasn't cheap but for some reason most ISP including telecom dont like it think i paid almost $300 for it few years back because i was sick and tired of the useless D-links and ive never had any speed problems or connection drops. Any way ive also tested this with my friends router just now and it reports all the same line and download speeds and has a 5ms first reply and his modem is brand new.

So do you think i should by a new modem?

My Connection is so fast i can cook eggs on it!

What are your ADSL connection stats from the modem?

Speedtest results don't mean anything if it's your wiring or DSL connection causing the issues.

44kBps is slow but it's not slow if your downloading from bulk download sites.
Like other have said, it's not dialup speeds, dialup is 8kBps

To get faster service at the helpdesk use a cellphone, because it cost them more to have you on hold the deal with cellphone calls quicker than calls from a landline.
