Hi. I have a Acer 1810TZ laptop with built-in 3G. It came bundled with Vodafone software.

My question: Will a 2Degrees SIM card installed in the laptop work okay for mobile broadband? If yes, do I need to download 2Degrees connection software before I can use broadband? Or am I limited to having to use T-stick? Thanks in advance

You can download the mobile broadband software from 2Degrees and that should be sufficient. I hope this helps.

As the 3G card is built in it will depend on the make and model of the 3G card. Is it too from Acer or a 3rd party card?

my first option would be to try the Vodafone software with the 2degrees SIM. if that works then you are sweet, but the Vodafone software while not being locked to Vodafone can make it hard to use other providers SIMs so you can look at editing a couple of XML files in the program directory or going on to option 2.

Option 2: Generally if you have a built in card, you should be able to access it as a modem in windows and therefore all you need to do is make the phone number *99# and that will kick off a data session with the default APN for that network. you will need to find a manual or google to find out how to set the APN for your device via AT modem commands

Option 3: stick to the T-stick.

if you want to try editing the Vodafone XML files let me know as that needs a post on its own.

Thanks for the reply, much appreciated. I am going to be travelling the south island over xmas and have now discovered, having looked into charges in more detail, that 2 degrees rates outside of wellington are more expensive than vodafone, so will be sticking with vodafone for this holiday.

For anyone else trying to do this I can confirm that it works.

Steps to get it to work.

Put the data sim in a normal cell phone and dial 222 this will take you though activating the sim.

Once activated put it into the 3G slot on the laptop. In the 1810TZ this is behind the battery.

Download the Acer 3G connection software and install. (you can uninstall the Vodafone software if you want)

Make sure 3G is enabled via the hardware switch (1810TZ)

Once the software is installed start it and go into Tools -> Options and Profile management.

Create a new profile call 2Degrees or what ever you want.

Change the APN to static and set it to internet

Under Authentication set the access number to *99# leave user name and password blank.

Save the profile.

Under network change the network to WCDMA preferred and Band to All Bands.

That's it. In the main 3G connection manager you should see a message at the bottom left of the window saying WCDMA 2degrees. On the connection tab just hit connect on the 2Degrees profile and you are away.
