Haven't heard anything since their last press release, stating that they were going to build a WCDMA network to cover the minimum 10% of population and then rely on regulated roaming for the rest of the country.

Since then... nothing. Vaporware if you ask me.

Yeah, Econet talks a lot but nothing's happened since they established themselves in NZ five years ago. Have a google to see what they've been up to in Africa though. Most interesting.

I don't believe they will ever come out of the paper.

You mean their accomplishments in terms of delivering a reliable phone service to 3rd world countries or their dodgy dealings in Zimbabwe? :-)  I've always wondered what they actually saw in NZ when the whole African market is so huge and so underdeveloped - maybe it was just the upfront money they could get from us knowing that it would take years until anybody wanted it back!

Looking at the MED register now they did register 20 or so 40GHz microwave links in February so they are up to something.

Would make a nice small trial network. Maybe somebody on here from Auckland who knows what a UMTS panel looks like can let us know if they actually have any sites in place yet!

The plot thickens then.
