Hey guys,
I'm just in the process of making a decision about go forward with colocation. Currently we have 1u with ICONZ but this will be expanding to 3u ASAP and 8u next month probably topping off around 12-15u in May as we move servers from our office to the Datacenter. This is my current Pro/Con list.

Pros:

  • Much cheaper than ICONZ (who are $130/month per RU while Orcon is like $50/month)

  • Same supplier as our office internet so possibly less likely to lose connectivity

  • Increased business with same supplier gives us more "buyer power"

  • Pool international bandwidth (which will save around $300/month)

  • Our account manager at Orcon is HEAPS better than the guy at ICONZ

Cons:

  • Bad reviews about Orcon colo (especially from Magu) with problems in getting access and status updates during downtime

  • Further away (we are in Penrose and they are on the Shore while ICONZ is in CBD)

  • Seem to have to pay for access unless you have a full cabinet while ICONZ is free

  • They had a major power outage, never had issues with ICONZ

  • Don't seem to peer at APE/WIX with IPv6

So yea, there are a variety of factors that will help us decide. Input from current/past/future customers or anyone who has considered them is appreciated :)

If you plan to go up to 15 RU like you said, recommend going with a half rack or 1/3 rack. These products allow unattended access, so you will be able to access the DC without the need for Orcon staff to escort

Also, We do peer with APE with IPV6. Haven't got around to setting up ipv6 on Wix yet.

There're at least 2 of us that lurk and comment where required. Just didn't seem to be any technical issues here to address. ICONZ aren't the cheapest hosting provider for good reason. You'll also find that you get free national with us and that you connect at 100mb. It's been a while since I've looked at what the others are doing but I know that both of those used to have costs associated almost everywhere.

I'm a technical guy and can't really represent ICONZ, especially not commercially, but if you're having problems with your account manger, request a new one. Each have their area of expertise and one may suit your needs better than another.

My past experiences with ICONZ have not been the best, hence my sarcastic reply.  Good work proving me wrong Smile

I have no idea of Orcon's colocation, but having had Geekzone hosted on ICONZ premises for years I have nothing to complain about - always got great service with good technical expertise there.

The one time our 1U server hit a problem we had a virtual machine created by ICONZ in case our recovery didn't work. We did not use the VM after the recovery was complete, but the option was there if we needed.

Also we had early access to their IPv6 infrastructure.

We moved out of ICONZ September 2010 for commercial reasons, nothing related to their technical side. We stayed with them for almost eight years (started with a shared host account on SiliconBlue which was then bought by ICONZ, and moved to a colocation plan once Geekzone was too large to share servers).

Hey guys,
Thanks for the responses. Yup ICONZ has been great but still quite expensive (by almost $500-$600 a month I think). I heard today from another of Orcon's customers that they are planning to build a datacenter south of the bridge within 12 months. Anyone heard of this?

We host with Datacom in their Albany DC. Can't complain about the service and connection quality either.

I wouldn't be too surprised, I heard from somewhere that they were at some stage toying with the idea of a Christchurch DC before some other provider which shall not be named got it first.

DC's popping up all over the place these days, think IBM has one in the works too.

Should have knocked on wood when you said that, didn't datacom's DC fall off the internet for a bit there earlier.

The IBM Highbrook datacentre was announced in December 2009, opening in 2011, and I've posted a video walkthrough of the new datacenter.

The Datacom datacentre lost connectivity from 10:20pm through 1:17am... Probably I jinxed it with my post here...

I should also comment on this. There was a power issue a few months ago, but Orcon never lost power to the entire site, we just lost power to one of the four distribution boards in the DC.

Customers who were off another distribution board or had redundant power were fine.

Went there yesterday and have decided to go with them. Attached are some photos including a number of cabinets who have dual power feeds from separate distribution boards. It's $1700~ to install a second power feed so maybe we will do that later.

edit: they asked for them to be removed.
