Does anyone use this modem/router and what have your experiences been with it? How far can the wireless connection go, and through how many walls, while staying strong? I will be in a sleepout about 1.5 metres away from the main house and want a strong internet connection. I want to know if I should buy a third party modem/router or rent this :) Renting would be more preferable so I could share the burden with my flatmates. Thanks!

I have this (Gigaset SX763) and have had no problems. I have not had to test the range too much though. On the odd occasions I have used the wireless capability I have had no problems with the unit in the ground floor and the laptop upstairs about 5 metres away.

My understanding is that the radio power of these units is very limited by regulation and that because of this nomonew brand will be better/worse in range than others.

Hi, assuming the real path distance between you and the router is 5-10m and there are 2-3 internal walls and 2 external walls (that I assume are simple timber frame with weatherboard or fibrelight, and not concrete block) then I would expect you should still get reasonable signal.

The Orcon homehub is a Dynalink RTA1025W which is not a bad router, however they do run hot and are known to packup early in life as a result. I suggest you dont pay Orcon their monthly rental of this router and purchase your own, TP-Link is a brand I recommend.

I know you have mentioned elsewhere that you cannot get a wired connection from the house to your room, is that really the case, or just a too hard for a person not use to wiring things? A wired connection would ensure that you are not effected by WiFi propagation and other issues.

Hi, according to the picture in the following link, it would appear so, and having recently dealt with central filter installs for Orcon customers the RTA1025 is what was given to them and included an Orcon badge/sticker to boot, so I would say yes.

They used to send out a Gigaset, but have not seen those for a while.

Edit, maybe its a matter of if you are on Orcon+ or TelecomWholesale as to what modem they provide, the RTA's have all been Wholesale connections.
