Hi all We are keen to give this Voip a go and italk looks good.

Our current setup is Telstra clear Cable internet (CHCH) + Telstra Clear voice line

I see its ok to run italk through another ISP so thats good. :)

Questions i have are:

If we port our Telstra Clear number to italk will there be any install costs??? when we changed to T/C they had to do some cable changing in the box out on the road when installing (house already had T/C cable once before we moved in it but wasnt being used)

Can I use any VOIP phone and plug into my router? ...e.g: http://www.trademe.co.nz/Computers/Other/auction-348836107.htm
is it better to use a VOIP phone or use ATA with existing phone?

I have a slingshot account from afew years back when i was using them as my ISP (just kept it to keep my email address the same)

I recommend either VFX or 2talk. iTalk doesn't even have working voicemail notifications.

If you know nothing about VoIP then VFX is your best option since the hardware is fully provisioned by them. You simply plug it in and away you go. 2talk requires manually configuring your device.

I find that iTalk's voicemail-to-email function is more than sufficient as notification of voicemail. :)

That's not an excuse for having a core function of a softswitch that doesn't work. Not everybody wants to monitor their email 24/7 just to know they've got a voicemail message.

Admittedly I have an HTC Desire, so I get instant notification of email :-)

You do need a reasonable internet connection for VoIP, and best to configure your router to give priority to VoIP traffic. If you don't want to re-work any voice wiring then get a good VoIP handset, otherwise try to get an ATA thats reliable enough to replace your phone line (along with a UPS on your modem/router). I expect best reliability/quality connection for both 2talk and italk would be with callplus, and for VFX would be Xnet since traffic stays on their network.

Time to find a new industry!
