ORCON EXPANDS LLU NETWORK Orcon+ for Hamilton and Tauranga

Orcon has unbundled exchanges in two new cities.

From today, households and businesses in Hamilton and Tauranga (Hamilton Central and Tauranga Central exchanges) can sign up for Orcon’s local loop unbundled (LLU) telephone and ADSL2+ broadband network.  The move means consumers in four New Zealand centres will now have access to Orcon’s LLU after highly successful launches of the service in Auckland in 2008, and Wellington in 2009.

Orcon head of sales and marketing Taryn Hamilton says the company’s drive into new markets has resumed in earnest.

“We have had a lot of enquiries from New Zealanders about when various exchanges will be unbundled. Naturally we’re delighted to be bringing our award-winning service to Tauranga and Hamilton.”

Orcon’s unbundled ADSL2+ service has the potential to deliver speeds of up to 24 megabits per second (Mbps) downstream and up to 1 Mbps upstream[1], roughly tripling the downstream bandwidth capacity of standard ADSL.

Orcon was the first provider to introduce new phone and internet plans following the Government’s decision in late 2006 to ‘unbundle’ the local loop, the copper wires that link homes to their neighbourhood exchanges.

The next-generation Orcon+ network features a range of plans that give both residential and business customers access to ‘world-class’ broadband as well as features such as unlimited calling throughout New Zealand.

The ultimate residential package includes an unlimited number of overseas calls to one of 16 countries of the subscriber’s choice.

How's the ROI going to work out for all this expensive gear with UFB/FTTH in >10 years?

With Kordia being an SOE and Orcon being owned by Kordia it's effectively tax payer money at the end of the day.

Hope the bean counters have worked out that is it will actually turn a profit in the small window pre UFB/FTTH.

Wouldn't have done it, if the ROI wasn't worth it :-)

If anyone from Orcon can answer this: Will other exchanges like Frankton, Te Rapa and Hamilton East have Orcon gear installed in them?

Interesting they are going for the central exchanges ie business districts. Apparently Orcon are going to start their own HSNS style product within the next couple of months and the pricing I've heard is literally half of what Telecom Wholesale are charging. Could be quit ea lucrative investment if that were the case, especially if they wholesale it themselves which would be a very wise move IMO.

Get 100 customers per Exchange Charging $400 a pop for a 10mbps symetrical service. Maybe remove $100 of that for Chorus line charges and they have $30,000 coming in per month to basically cover backhaul and equipment. Not bad IMO.
