Hey guys,
I heard about this a couple of weeks ago but here it is in the media:

So basically Orcon will be launching their own version of Telecom Wholesale's HSNS service. I think this is a really good idea and shows that after LLU being active for so many years now that finally some innovation is coming out.

From what I heard from the person @ Orcon I was talking to pricing was something like $400/month for a 10mbps symmetric connection which is much cheaper than fiber or Telecom Wholesale HSNS (like half the price).

Any word if you can get a subnet of ip's with that or if it has a gigabyte cap or is proper dedicated?

You will definitely be able to get your own subnet and it will probably be like their other services where its unlimited line speed national and you pay for either flat rate or per GB international. TBH I think this is a really big deal as its bringing fibre speeds with half (or even less) of the price tag and no crazy installation fee.

Sensible. VDSL is oriented to fully cabinetised networks. SHDSL is oriented to the network setup of longer reach LLU.

Time to find a new industry!

mind that this is probably only the circuit price - but it will still be significantly cheaper. you'll have to add the internet access costs on top of that.

Half or less of the price tag? I take it you're thinking in terms of the access charge? In which case for the $400/mth price quotes before I can grab a 100mbit CIR feed for fiber or have a truly dark fibre strand between two places (less than 10km in length = 1gbit with single strand SFP modules)

perhaps in your corner of teh country - where you can actually string fibre along powerpoles instead of having to bury it, but in much of th rest of the country it costs a lot more than that. Telecom, Telstraclear, Vector and Citylink - all charge more than $400/month for access in Auckland.

The UFB initiative will change all that eventually, I expect.

That is UFB pricing :) and with trenched sections aswell. The day's of paying 4 figures for an SLA backed layer2/3 sub-30mbit circuit are numbered. I certainly wouldn't be advising any client of mine to sign into a 2-3 year contract in cities

Lol not here in Auckland. Lol I have to pay $850 a month for Telstra to drop a 60m ethernet cable down our building ducts which plugs into their switch on the top floor. They charged $495 for the install and I had to help the installer for all of the 1 hour he was there! And for that I get 10mbps down and 20mbps up to Orcon and free national.

If I could get that for $400 a month I'd be happy :)

actually, you pay that to orcon, who pay some of it back to telstraclear, plus they pay telstraclear for their end. if you were doing it with telstraclear, you'd be paying double as they charge you for *both* ends of the fibre! (unless they've changed their pricing model recently)
