Have has some issues using data on my phone (HTC Wildfire) while outside the main centres (specifically outside Christchurch).

Before December last year I was on pre paid and the data packs worked fine outside Christchurch.  The next time I was outside Christchurch was in January when it no longer would work.  Between this time I had switched to pay monthly and had visited Australia using a Virgin Sim in the phone, though not sure if either of these would have affected it.  The data still works fine in Christchurch.

I did notice that I was using the APN: http://m.2degreesmobile.co.nz/ and have changed this now to the APN: internet and have data roaming turned on though am not sure if this will help.

Have not contacted 2 degrees yet as am sure I have done something wrong in the settings on the phone.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks for the replies

Data roaming is on
Have not text unlock to 223, will go for a drive in the weekend and once roaming on the Voda network will try this and let you know how I get on (will also call 2 degrees at this point and see if they can help).

Again thanks for the feedback

oh yeah lots of SMS's - but what I didn't know is that the thing was automatically downloading my FB and gmail LOL - Know how to turn that off now. I actually bought the ph to travel with - in the end it stayed off in the bottom of my bag as everywhere we stayed had wifi for my netbook! Unfortunately you can't ditch the guide book yet and rely on phs - in the next 5 years I guess though

So... it DID work, but it just used up all your data/credit? Or it didn't work?

Make sure you text 'unlock' to 233, not 223. ;-)

Thanks for that have text "Unlock" to 233. Am off out of town this weekend so will try it out.

Just a quick question. Will this mean that if I go over the 50MB of data it will automatically start charing for data or will it still require me to unlock it once I have gone over the 50MB

Yes, that is exactly what it means.

@Salty it worked in Europe - I turned data off . On return to NZ I turned the ph back on and turned back data - but data wasn't working . I had a brainwave and turned the ph off and back on again - and now its working - so you have to a) text to 233 unlock and then b) turn the ph off and on - well that's what worked with the Ideos anyways

Thanks Salty

In hindsight was possibly a dumb question. Thought in the past when I went over (happened once due to Google maps updating before I had the chance to update it over wifi) that it then became locked, but looking back at the text alerts from 2degrees it clearly states that you are here on charged per MB once it is used up.

Thanks all for the help. Can't confirm yet that it has fixed it but am pretty sure that this would have been the issue.
