Hey Guys

I was just thinking of buing 2degrees mobile broadband. It will be mostly used on one PC inside, I am in the wellington, lower hutt area.

I was wondering,. is the speed good? What are download speeds like? Compared to DSL??

Thanks for your help. :)

It depends on your device.

I got up to 300KB per second downloads from a Nokia 2730 in the Christchurch CBD, not as fast in Bexley with a phone as a modem.

In Bexley I use a 3G Huawei E960 wireless router and get 2.18MB download and 0.33MB upload most of the time on speed tests.

Overall very happy with it, using 2Degrees data for everything Skype-in and Skype-out etc

We use to pay $150-$160 per month for a Telecom phone, Slingshot internet, and mobile prepaid, now we are down to $50-$60 per month using Skype and 2Degrees prepaid. Plus when we go away for the weekend the services come with us, and there isn't any connection frees or 12-36 month contracts, costs nothing to move house

Interesting question.

I've just tested mine - with a reasonably strong signal at home in the eastern suburbs of Wellington - and I get:

Download:0.82 Mb/s
Upload:0.34 Mb/s
Ping: 123ms

This is acceptable performance for my occasional use, but it's not exactly lightning fast.

i have slingshot all you can eat at home + my 2degrees mobile.

I use my 2degrees mobile to stream podcasts and video - and sometimes downloading torrents. Its blows my slingshot connection away :0

btw i get 1.5Mbit - 2.5Mbit via my 2degrees connection.

Thats only 100KB/s, which I suppose isn't TOO bad, but no where near ADSL2 speeds.

If you mean 1-2mbit, then yes. Depending on signal strength/usage/etc
(1-2mbit is ~125KB-250KB/s)

My mileage is 125KB-250KB/s which isn't too bad I suppose.

What I'm really concerned about is 2Degree's accuracy in assessing data usage. My account showed 1.5Gb usage in the first 5 days of barely intermittent use and nothing very large or significant being downloaded.

I contested this and discovered 2 Degrees staff can view my session data usage but I am not permitted to.

Not happy with this at all. There were vast numbers of complaints in Britain about Vodafone's mobile broadband creative accounting where data usage was concerned and I've reason to wonder if it isn't going on here too.

Not giving us a means to check our own session details is worrying especially when we get alarming stats like mine.wed

Sorry? Your data usage is right there in Your 2degrees. Have you looked there?

+1 to Salty for the online data usage monitor.  I would be suprised if the usage was wrong.  Are you sure you didn't have skype/Windows Update/torrent apps running in the background?  My wife has found the data usage meter accurate and up to date.
