But seriously. Are you making or receiving calls okay?

And is the phone definitely registering to the Telecom Cook Islands network okay? You could try calling 2degrees on +64 22 200 2000.

OK.
Did a lot of testing and looks like the only thing not working is incoming texts that are sent into 2D's network from outside of NZ.
So I am not getting any texts from Canada or Skype, but that usually works when in NZ.

Well I never got any inbound SMS which didn't originate from NZ,  to my ported VF number when I was travelling in the US over Christmas.

There is a huge explanation in another thread which you might want to read.  Is your number ported from VF or Telecom?

Hi there

Sorry to hear about the failed texts.  They may be getting rejected by Telecom Cook Islands if it's coming from a network they do not have an agreement with.

The article where SaltyNZ explains overseas texting is here btw - The Short Message Service in particular this part -

"International Roaming
Oh, and there's one more wrinkle - if the SMS from X to 2degrees is terminated via SS7, and the 2degrees customer is roaming in a network with which X has no signaling interconnect, the message won't terminate there either, or vice versa for that matter; if X's subscriber is roaming somewhere 2degrees has no signaling with, messages won't go to X either."

Can you PM me with your 2D number and the number and network they're coming from in Canada.

Cheers

I've had other issues in the Cook Islands.

On two different visits with a Vodafone NZ SIM if anyone in the UK sent me a TXT while I was roaming the text would keep arriving until the phone's memory filled up.

When I got back from the holiday and landed in NZ I got one more copy of each of the sent messages which appeared to have cleared the queue.

In some respects this was worse than getting no messages as I couldn't leave my phone on without it complaining about new texts or running out of memory.

That's interesting; I had a similar problem in the US a while ago. When using an NZ phone I was able to receive texts from NZ numbers but not from other US numbers. I actually had two phones with me (I think it's always good to have a backup); one Telecom and one 2degrees. Both had the same issue.

Which was my experience with my 2D phone. I also had two phones, but the other had a T-Mobile SIM in it which had no problems receiving SMS from anybody.
