Until this evening, we've been without 2degrees service here in the Lyttelton Harbour basin since around 9pm on the 22nd of Feb. We must only have one tower that points this way so I'm guessing its backup battery ran out about then.

I went into Christchurch this morning and as soon as I went into the city the texts and missed call messages flowed in.

Usually, the iphone switches to Vodafone when out of 2degrees coverage but that may not be for areas that 2degrees "should" have coverage.

No one was hurt in our family but how would you feel if you were trapped under a collapsed roof looking at "no service" on your mobile for a couple of days?

Has anyone had a similar experience? What about the other carriers?

If you got 'No Service' instead of 'Emergency Calls only' I expect Vodafone was down as well? There was no power to the area right? And the tunnel was closed? Of course that's cold comfort if you're trapped.

Even if you had 'no service' instead of 'emergency calls only' showing on your phone you would be best to give it a go and call 111 anyway, to force the phone into emergency call mode, and see if it can find you a network.

Thanks for the replies.

We were OK this time. Never lost the landline (although we had to hunt around for an old non-cordless phone). It's just that lots of friends/family were txting us & we were trying to contact others via txt & couldn't.

Just wondering for next time...

all the carriers had different areas where they went down sadly.

the earthquake damage to the networks themselves, plus damage to powerlines, plus massive usage spikes as people all try to call/txt at the same time is an almost perfect storm of problems.

Could I suggest checking your iphone? goto Settings > Carrier, and ensure your are set to Automatic instead of locked to 2degrees, this way you should hunt to VF in event of no 2d, yes 2d just have 1 tower on that side of town, but its outside of the LAC exclusion zone, so you can make calls on VF if enabled. Presume if settings OK that VF was down as well (and coverage from site covering Akaroa/Gebbies etc.
