Asked at Warehouse Stationery and DSE in Whakatane. Neither sell data SIMs. Was suggested that Tauranga might be the closest source.
Wanting it to use in a Vodafone R201 Wifi Modem I just picked up.
Any pointers to whether I can set up the web interface to allow it to send texts?

They probably only sell them at stores in their broadband zones

there is no such thing as a 'data sim'.

unlike many other countries all the providers in NZ allow you to use their data plans on any device (and so the plans can be put onto any sim).

most other places give good data pricing for smartphones, but charge relatively more for mobile broadband.

If you're in Whakatane, data on 2degrees will be expensive as you are outside of their broadband zone (Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Queenstown). You will probably be better off on Vodafone or Telecom.

2degrees data price is same as vodafone $6/50MB or $10/100MB.

This is my alternative data avenue when I'm out of Telecom coverage.

Data sim comes loaded with 100meg pack for $20

But I think JohnR is right, and it will be slightly more economic to buy normal $5 sim and topup

I would go vodafone if the sim price wasn't so eye-gouging

.......only if you plan to never use more than 100MB in a month.

Vodafone also has 500MB for $30 and 2GB for (IIRC) $60 - which works out waaaaaay cheaper than 2D national pricing where 1GB will cost you over$100!

I currently am on the smartphone extra thru telecom giving me 1gig for $24 a month.
I am occasionally out of telecom range and am after alternative vodafone/2degrees data which I hope to only use very sparingly when needed.

Just to wrap up this thread: I purchased a regular 2degrees SIM off trademe, $20credit included, got it for $16. Loaded it into the Vodafone R201 wifi modem and it's all go. Will send texts via the web interface, and I set the APN manually and data connects up just fine.
