Hi,

I got back yesterday from 6months travelling around UK and the USA... (man they have great speeds and data allowances over there! We are missing out!)

I did a speedtest.net on my Orcon connection today (that I have kept going while I was away)

I am getting poor speed from what I can see...  i used to get around 4 to 5mb/s

Can anyone tell me if Orcon are still having issues?

If they are what are the best alternatives are out there, I work from home and require large amounts of data...

Looking at xtra, they tell me my exchange is due to be upgraded in June 2011, does this means orcon can give me better speeds once this happens or do I have to change to Xtra to get the ADSL2 speeds when exchange upgrade is complete?

My stats on the tests I have done today are all arounf the figures seen below...

Thanks for any help offered.

My experience of Orcon - still pretty rubbish. Streaming from youtube is *ok* during the day, but pretty much off the cards at peak times.

Basically it's complete crap. Speed in general is pretty bad for international.

They have also left the Telecommunications Disputes Resolution scheme.

Yeah you can pretty much forget about streaming anything after 5pm, its pathetically slow.

I'm trying to stream some popular youtube stuff now and even on 360p it's constantly buffering.

My phone's 3G youtube streaming beats the pants off Orcon.

Same with TVNZ ondemand, which is meant to be one of their partnered sites. Yay free traffic, shame we can't actually use it.

Peak time speeds with ADSL2. From 1am to 4pm I can normally get 10MB/s+

A move from Orcon to Telecom (Pro Plan) for me some months ago is one of the BEST decisions I have made for internet services (ADSL2+ as it SHOULD be).

Have you been put onto a cabinet whereas before you were on Orcon+ maybe ? It happened to a workmate, was getting great speed then one day was only getting 1-2mbps. Orcon have since got him running again at full speed.

From the stats it look like your upload speed is throttled to 128kbs (the 0.13mps upload figure), this will be seriously affect your working from home ability: uploading files, large emails and remote desktoping. Check with Orcon about that for starters, you may be on a plan that has that restriction or it may a mistake on their part.

ping182nz: Hi,

Going by all the forum posts about Orcon recently they are still having hot and cold periods

ping182nz: so what are the alternatives...

Telecom retail currently use the same plans/services from Telecom wholesale that other ISP's can use.

Also in some exchanges other ISP's (mostly Vodafone, Orcon, Telstraclear, Slingshot/Callplus, Compass) have installed their own equipment.

There is heaps of choice for what ISP you go with:

Telecom, Telstraclear, Maxnet, Snap, Xnet, Orcon, Vodafone, Slingshot, Actrix, ICONZ, Woosh, Kiwilink, Compass, Worldnet, NZNet, Hosting Direct, Xtreme, Unleash.. more.

It comes down to price/performance, the older larger ISP's offer good peak time performance but higher prices and the opposite for the smaller cheaper ISP's.
