I used to be an Orcon customer a couple years ago and was connected to their unbundled Takapuna exchange. I left and moved to Telecom due to the usual issues Orcon was experiencing at the time (poor peak & international speeds) and all of those issues disappeared and things have been good since.

I'm on a Total Home Broadband package, but with having a Netflix and Hulu subscription, as well as using Apple TV, 40GB isn't quite enough any more.

So if I change to the 80GB plan, with Telecom it will cost us $155 a month (includes $10 for the SmartPack).

We recently received Orcon's 'Best Deal Ever' mailer, and after personalising the plan on their website to get exactly the same as Telecom it would cost us $135 a month. Or for $165 a month I could get 130GB each month.

I called Orcon and two CSRs (I called twice as I forgot to ask a couple questions) told me that I should experience speeds either the same or better than what I currently have on Telecom (we're still on the Takapuna exchange).

The Best Deal Ever is a 12 month contract, and when I explained the reasons why I left Orcon in the first place, both CSRs said that either way if I wanted to leave for whatever reason I would still have to pay the disconnection fee.

Calling rates aren't really a factor for us, it's just the broadband allowance.

It'd be great if I could just trial the service for a while and then commit to 12 months if it went well, but that's not an option apparently.

I want to give Orcon a shot but don't want to experience deja vu again so what would you do?! I see on the forums there appears to still be the odd lingering issue over peak and international speeds, but it looks like a lot of people are getting good speeds and the most recent Epitiro report seems to support that as well.

Thanks in advance!

The best service, is the most consistent over a long period of time. From what I can tell, Telecom have the best record here to date. Not worth the risk to switch imo.

Yeah exactly that's the thing I keep coming back to: I can't complain about the service. Whether it's 9pm or 9am speeds are consistent and always have been since day one; I don't really have anything bad to say about them.

Agree with all here.  If you value consistency, stay with Telecom.  Price isn't everything.

Orcon do seem to have these reoccurring periods of sucking however the amount of posts about poor Orcon speed have died down, things seem to be going great currently from what I gather.

It's a toss up really.

Well maybe it was a sign.... our household got a phone call from Orcon trying to sell us the Best Deal Ever, so when I explained the above to them they said we could sign up to their standard contract-free plan and then change over to the Best Deal Ever plan if all goes well.

I decided to sign up as really I have nothing to lose. We aren't in a contract with Telecom so there's no fee to leave, and obviously the plan we'll start off with on Orcon is contract-free, so worst case scenario if it's crap I'll just switch back to Telecom again, and for that I won't mind signing up to a contract to avoid the $99 fee as I already know their service is good.

Switchover is scheduled for 14th April so I'll see how it goes...

Maybe this wasn't such a bad idea. Connection went down for a short while this morning about 9am, got a text and an email immediately after it came back up saying everything was all go, so of course I performed some obligatory speed tests.

Previously I'd get about 9.50Mb/s to the Vodafone Auckland server pretty much all day and all night, maybe up to 10.30 if I was lucky.

First test on Orcon and it was 14.50Mb/s and has been ever since. Sydney is slighty less, LA is about 10. I've been running tests all day and this evening and it has barely deviated from the initial figures. Everything feels a lot quicker too.

So at this stage I'm stoked! Much quicker speeds, a bit less money, long may it last!

Did you have to notify telecom and you're moving landline and broadband to another provider ? (so they stop charging you) ..or do they do that automatically ?

No. Your new ISP handles closing your account with the previous provider.

I hope your experience is typical - we're scheduled for changeover today from Vodafone to Orcon. Fingers crossed for the same performance!

Sorry for being a noob, but so basically Orcon can notify Slingshot and Telecom that i've moved and they can stop charging my bank account ?  So i don't need to ever deal with those 2 again ?

+1 for Orcon.

I signed up on their website on Saturday night and they connected me Monday!
Awesome service and yes speeds are better than my previous ISP!

ALWAYS CONTACT THE OLD ISP TO ENSURE THE ACCOUNT IS CLOSED FULLY AFTER YOU HAVE MOVED SUCCESSFULLY TO THE NEW PROVIDER

This is in fact required by the contract/terms of service of many ISP's.

You can not rely 100% on the winback system between ISP's/Chorus/Telecom Wholesale.
