OK first some background.  I am a bit of a miser so when 2degrees extended the life of the 12GB pack I  dropped our ADSL and going to mobile broadband as we generally only use 1-2GB per month.  I needed a router solution as we have wired and wireless devices that I wanted to connect (and I couldn't be faffed with the 4 hour "on" limit for the 2 degrees mifi type device).  Eventually if this worked reliably I was considering going with vodafone home phone wireless to reduce our landline charge as we wouldn't need a real landline for the ADSL.

First I got a Cradlepoint CTR350.  This seemed to work real well and as a bonus also worked with the XT and vodafone sticks, so that if we travelled outside the 2degrees broadband zones, we could still use the device.  Unfortunately I have found that the device locks up after a random period of time (could be hours or days), requiring a reset to get working again.  This then requires all the settings to be reloaded which is a bit of a PITA so I looked for a more reliable solution.

I saw a cheap vodafone complete HG556 modem on Trademe, so I thought that this would be the go.  It arrived last night, and although it works (kind of) it is like it is on Molasses.  Pages take ages to load - its like it the DNS server is on the moon or something.  Pages eventually load, but it takes ages.  The lights on the USB modem indicate that it is switching to HSDPA so I don't think that is the issue.  I've updated the firmware in the hg556a, and tried both Hauwei E1552 (2degrees) and K3715 (vodafone) modems in the device (both with my 2degrees SIM card though) and it makes no difference.

So my questions;
1.  Has any one got the hg556 working well on 2degrees (or XT for that matter).  If so, what is the trick?

2.  Any other suggestions for what I should try next.  Was thinking about getting a router with USB function and then loading it up with Open WRT or something like that - has anyone tried this with a 2degrees USB modem and can offer some advice?

3. Is it all just too hard and should I just call it quits and go back to ADSL?

Suggestions very welcome.

Why not just get a wifi adapter for the wired units and grab something that provide wifi hotspot.

That's a possibility that I have considered - suggestions for a device?  From my reading the 2degrees pocket wifi shuts off after 4 hours, so would require us to restart the device several times a day.  Ideally I want an always on device.

I use a "Pocket Wifi" from Vodafone AU but it is very similar to the 2degrees Mifi.

The 4 hour limit is the life of the battery (give or take 2 hours) but I leave mine plugged in to the power 24/7 and it works fine without requiring reset.

I've got the Vodafone R201 mifi running a 2degrees SIM. It also remains transmitting if you leave it plugged in to power.

Thanks for that - can anyone from 2degrees confirm whether the pocket wifi device will remain connected indefinitely when it is mains powered.  I get see conflicting statements online when looking at reviews of the hauwei e5830.

Hi, the device is designed to turn itself off automatically after 4 hours but this can be reset -

1. Log into the router by entering in the address http://192.168.1.1

2. Select ‘Advanced Settings’

3. Select ‘WLAN Settings’

4. Select ‘WLAN Basic Settings’

5. Select ‘Wifi Auto Off’, select ‘Disabled’

6. Select ‘Apply’

That should do the trick.

Thanks 1eStar, can you confirm that the device is unlocked and all you have to do is stick in the 2degrees SIM.  I am leaning towards this device rather than the 2degrees one as apparently it does UMTS 900/2100 whereas the 2degrees one only does UMTS2100, or so I believe.

According to their website the 2degrees Pocket Wifi is 900/2100 for 3G:

I have found the Huawei E960 router just perfect for the 12GB plan

It has 4 LAN ports, 1 USB and WIFI

I can use the WIFI anywhere on my property (800sqm). Having LAN slots has meant that I have been able to setup a PC free Skype phone for phone calls.

No land-line phone bills each month, no bloated internet provider bills each month, just a $150 top up voucher which you can get of Trade Me for around $80 every 6 months and 39.50 euros per year for Skype-in Skype-out and Skype voice mail

Our family use to pay $150-$170 per month for communication all up, now we are around $30-$50, only difference in service is we can't watch a lot of youtube videos like we use too

Hard to get this router in New Zealand, I got mine from Ebay
