getting to the point

recently for some reason our web site kept reverting to a slightly older version, i rang and asked whats up, to be told oh we are upgrading our servers, i asked if they were going to inform me of this, to be told oh we emailed our clients, um no you didnt (yes i asked who they email and checked the account)!!

our web person made a oh no and deleted a file on our ftp server, she rang orcon to see if she could get some help, they get back to use via email 13 days later saying our web site looked ok, do we still need support? um no orcon we sorted it about 13 days ago...

then we were unable to upload to our ftp server, it said we had used all our space, which appeared not to be true (i did a full FTP check etc, 1 gig limit we have 600mb in use). so im on the phone with orcon, i get told there is a ticket priority system and they will get to my issue in time, if i hadnt suggested that as a stop gap measure that the limit be increased, i suspect that in 13 days they would have got back to be, actually its been a few days and i have not yet heard anything yet and you knwo what i dont expect to given the past history.

not to mention that from time to time our website has little mini outages

i mean really!!!

So tell me what am i supposed to do ORCON, I am now investigating moving my hosting because dealing with you sucks, and you never get back to me!! i shouldn't have to get such bad support that i then post on here.. but yeah im a little frustrated

i mean its not all bad, i use your home products and they work fine and im really happy with that price and speed etc...

Orcon Isn't really a hosting company - you'd be best to look elsewhere TBH. What kind of requirements do you have?

There are some really good reasonably priced hosting providers these days...

These two have been recommended a lot recently by friends:

http://www.sitehost.co.nz/

Why are NZ hosting solutions so stingy with their POP mailbox allowance....

Just curious, what do you mean stingy?

A lot of the newer NZ providers only offer 5 pop mailboxes - I have 5 email accounts myself for my domain, then a bunch more for other users of my domain (approx 20 mailboxes in total) - using DreamHost its not an issue as they give unlimited - yes, I could use aliases etc if I was using a NZ host but its easier for me to manage having it all on one system.

I suppose if you compare WebSlice with DreamHost POP allowances: 5 vs. Unlimited; you could infer stingyness.

I am not sure why you would need more than five e-mail addresses in the majority of cases though...

I'm sure if you have good reason they would be happy to upgrade you, the technical limitations are certainly trivial.

TBH I don't know why people in most cases limit the number of mailboxes. They are likely to be using something like Postfix which doesn't really matter. The only reason we limit the number is because we have to pay a per mailbox license cost to our mail server supplier.

Well it makes sense to limit it on the small plans, but what's the point of limiting it to 30? That's just weird.

@dragonx One of our engineers is ready to have a look at this - just need some account details from you. If you can message me, or email me - quentin.reade@team.orcon.net.nz - that would be great.

I'd advocate using a cost effective top class specialist provider for each individual part of the equation:

Example:

NZ Domain name registration: DiscountDomains, Domains4Less, HD etc
DNS service: DynDns, EveryDNS etc
NZ Web hosting: OpenHost, SiteHost, Webslice... many other options (your choice really)
Email hosting: Google Apps or MS BPOS
CDN for static web resources: Windows Azure, Amazon S3, Cloudfiles etc

You get a lot of flexibility with this approach and are not tied into one company, it's easy to change individual parts as needed.
