Hi

Received a new Motorola Defy today and popped in my old 2° SIM card and got messages such as "No Service" and "Emergency calls only" etc. I temporarily fixed this problem by choosing "Use 2G Only". However, everytime I turned 3G back on the service would be lost again and I'd have to switch it back to 2G and restart the phone. And yes I'm in the Christchurch coverage area.

A search on the net found some others with this problem, including an older locked thread in here which did not seem to conclude with a working solution.

In the Motorola forums someone suggested that using a micro SIM card solved their problems, so I went down to the 2° store and was able to swap my SIM details onto a new mirco SIM card for free which has solved the 3G problem. Yay!

Apart from that initial hiccup the phone seems pretty awesome so far. Good balance of specs and price ($536.50 delivered), the durable yet stylish compact design was the selling point for me and the official Android 2.2 shouldn't be too far off which should make it better still.

where did you buy the defy from? i have no issue with the old sim card

Hi,

I got it from Tech Brands Pacific. It's a French model. (SM,MB525,FR,RETAIL,LIC).

Only down side with this I've found so far is the instruction book and widget tips were in French and it comes with a Euro round pin style USB power adaptor. They provided a multi->NZ adaptor, but that means when I travel overseas I will need to take two adaptors which can make the whole charging adaptor long and heavy which can cause it it to pull away from a loose hotel powerpoint. Must remember to take some duct tape with me!

It could be that my original SIM card was just stuffed then. My old Nokia didn't have 3G so has never tried connected with 3G before. Although its a bit of a coincidence that serveral others have had the same problem.

Got a PM from "Davejones2" who started a topic on Geekzone in March (http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?ForumId=85&TopicId=78215) who says he ended up sending the phone back to the UK where he purchased it from.

Are you in Auckland or somewhere else? As far as I know 2d use the VF network in most place of NZ, so you must enable the roaming data option of you Android data, just have a try!It won't be produce more data fees since 2D will cover it.

No I'm in Christchurch 3G coverage area. Just to reiterate, swapping to a new (micro SIM) 2degrees card fixed the problem immediately. :)

I have had exactly the same problem and solved with swapping to micro-sim.

The normal sims seem to have trouble in Motorolas when trying to use the 3G 2100 MHz band. Something about transmitting the user ID details correctly.

The micro-sims work differently to the normal sims and don't seem to have problems.
