I have an iPhone4 and have used 2degrees since September. I live in Cambridge and recently had a week in Auckland and a weekend in Whitianga on the Coromandel.
While entering AK, just past the bombays, I lost signal completely and had to manually set 2degrees as my network, as previously I was roaming on vodafone. I used a 1Gb pack for the week which was fast and tethered it to my laptop. Worked awesome.
I then reset my settings to roaming 'on' and 'automatic' network selection before venturing home, as I thought this would stop me needing to choose the network again.
Not.....
Coming into Pokeno..... No signal again.
Am I doing this right? And do I have to choose my network when ever I enter a 2degrees network area?

My next issue was in Whitianga this weekend.
All I could get was a 2g signal although vodafone have full 3g and extended 3g coverage in that area. I know this as my father uses a vodem stick and it runs at 3g speeds and the vodafone coverage maps. Is this a vodafone thing of keeping data competition out of the area by having 2degrees running at such pathetic speeds?

Cheers

Vodafone often have congestion related issues in the Coromandel over big holidays.

Very true. I was in Pauanui just after new years and between the times of 0700 and 2330 data was unusable.

Hi John, so you're saying the lack of 3G services to 2degrees subs over the weekend in Coromandel was not a congestion issue? Obviously the other issue is not related.

Correct if you read the OP the handset was not switching to the 3G network

Thanks for that.
Yes, the iPhone would only pick up GPRS at Whitianga and it seems that vodafone does not switch on 3g for 2degrees customers. Here in the Waikato I am roaming on Vodafone 3G and extended 3G all the time.

Going back to the issue entering/leaving 2degrees coverage - it might be an iphone issue, I've heard some other anecdotal stuff along these lines. It should still happen automatically, but it might take a long-ish time. How long did you leave it before doing manual selection, out of interest?

Lost coverage at bombay, still nothing when I arrived in Cambridge, so 1.5hrs and had to manually choose Vodafone to get a connection

I've had no issues with 2deg<->VF, using extended 3G on VF, etc on the Auckland to Hamilton road both ways this month, with my iPh4, FYI

My micro sim would have been one of 2degrees 1st ones. They sent it out when I got my phone at the end of August, I wonder if this is the problem? It is blank with no markings on it but still has the sms app on the sim which can be used on an iPad.
