Try a port reset. Unplug your modem from the jack for about 10 minutes, plug it back in and see how you go.

rebooted modem a few times, still..........

i m very sure there is a problem on orcon side, not my side.

when i get up in the morning, network was ok, fast speed on all International websites. after 5PM, speed starts getting slow, until 8PM international speed fully slows down, some websites even cant open at all. After 12AM, speed on international websites back to normal.

A port reset is not the same as rebooting your modem. Turn the modem off, unplug it from the jack, wait 10 minutes, plug it back in, turn the modem on.

Hmmmm, nah. Same is happening for me. All national browsing is fine. International is extremely temperamental, though. A port-reset won't fix this issue.

I'm back at work tomorrow after a break so will check with the teams to see if there are any known issues on the network.

I'm also seeing this problem. Maybe it will be resolved next week when all the kids go back to school?

I see this as well especially during peak.

I have found that if I send all my traffic through a local Wellington based VPN, then the international problem disappears as my traffic is no longer going through Orcon's International retail connection.

This is a solution, but you just have to pay for it, I think around $12NZD a month.

VPN is a  solution。

But i think that just not right, as a orcon ISP  customer we all paid full price to have internet  service, why should i paying other $12NZ/m to use VPN???

i can understand that peak time will effect network speed, but once i found out even not possible to use facebook and hotmail, it's clearly, this is a fault!

BTW, those friends who use telecom has no problem at all.

I think a lot more people would be up in arms if that's really the case.. just saying.

That said, I saw alexx tried to help you with wget and stuff, did you try any of that?

Either your location are packed full of orcon users and congestion is really bad on Orcon gear, or it's just congested no matter which ISP you are on.

Would be helpful to find out for sure (by following alexx's advice on testing your connection) if you really want to have a proper connection.

i know many people joined orcon within a few weeks back because "the orcon best ever deal"

maybe that cause the problem, i guess orcon's network just cant handle high increase of users.........

see how's going, i thinking go back to telecom

It happens to me most days as well. Using telecom connection at the place I am staying.

Looking at renting a European server and creating a proxy.

The little things make the biggest difference.

It happens on my connection, my google apps gmail is almost to slow to use during peak, Same with google.co.nz, and any other outside (of NZ) sites.

I think either people are just putting up with it, or orcon are getting a lot of complaints but not doing anything about it.

For example, right now its 3.48pm on Wednesday, and I have decided to watch some HD trailers on my black Apple TV, using my normal orcon connection, it goes bloody slow sometimes not even loading, BUT, when I use my VPN, WOW, full 8Mbps. Instant gratification! ;)

How do you explain that? Cant be my exchange, or people around me using the net...

That was 17/04/11 7:00 PM
http://www.orcon.net.nz/support/network_status

But the performance was already going downhill prior to the 17th and has been up and down since then.
Worse in evenings and on wet days.

I'd like to take the credit for good stuff, but I think that was in another thread I mentioned using wget. Good for comparing download performance from different sites.
