I purchased a Defy second hand of trademe. It has a uk charger so I assume it was originally from there.
I used it with my vodafone sim for a while then switched to 2degrees.

When I start phone up it says emegency calls only.
When I try to connect it to the network manually in settings it say this sim card does not allow a connection to this network.

Customer care suggested the phone was locked to overseas network which allowed vodafoneNZ but not 2degrees.

I was inclined to agree except I would have thought the phone would ask for unlock code etc on start up.

Any Thoughts much appreciated.

I am also having this problem on both Defy and Milesotne. I solve it by forcing my mobile using GSM network, (settings->wireless & network settings -> mobile networks -> use only 2G networks)

I can just wait until there are better 3G signal in Dunedin before get a new SIM card. And will the free SIM card be given out forever if people having problems with 3G or just for now?

Any possibility the units you have are better suited for the XT network when using 3G???
There's a couple of different model variants of the device. All will work on the 2G networks but the 3G performance will be determined by the device variant you have.

I resolved the issue by completing my APN settings.

Also used the menu button to save them then reboot phone which I wasn't aware of.

Update.

Phone seemed to be working fine but I
discovered I had network set to 2G.
When I set it to 3G the phone went to "emergency calls only"
Seem to have the same issue as on the other post so will try the micro sim fix.

Are you sure it is a UK charger (as opposed to a US type) - refer to oxnsox's comment above
