okay so looking at the new roaming rates, it seems to be cheaper to call than to text? logical? I think not.

Isn't it 79c per SMS and $2.44 per minute? In AU UK US that is. 79c and $4.xx elsewhere.

EDIT: Ahhh I see, cheaper voice from Oz, meh 80c is pretty standard for SMS from abroad, I'd take the voice price as a bonus bargain :-)

SMS connectivity has very little to do with voice calling.

how though dont they go through the same channels more or less? what's the scene in an international operator charging more for texts than calls?

Maybe you should read the top thread in this forum which explains how SMS works.

Voice traffic and SMS have nothing in common with each other.

Annoyingly these great rates kicked in just *after* we came back from the US!

At one stage I had to make a 1800 call there, lasted 6 minutes, cost about $35. :(

That's when you use a local phone or a payphone or calling card. I never used my phone for calls when I was over there, only texting.

There was some urgency to that call, otherwise I would have. I have a VoIP app on my iPhone back to my Asterisk PBX and on from there to Xnet, but at that time I couldn't get to any free WiFi to be able to use it.

I didn't think about a payphone, I can't remember the last time I used one!!

NZ 44c/min. That's what, AU35 c/min. It seems to be cheaper for an Australian to use a 2degrees SIM card to make (outgoing) calls than it would be to use an Australian SIM card.

Not sure who's pricing you are looking at, but there are plenty of Australian carriers who offer pricing that is far cheaper than this.

I only looked here www.telstra.com.au/mobile/prepaid/rates, which suggests that a prepaid call with Telstra has a connection fee of AU 35-39c then a per min rate of AU80-89c/min.

As you say, though, I'm sure there are better offers out there, including from Telstra. I find the Australian "bonus" credit system very confusing.

Finally; someone who read the small print! I worked it out a year ago that the average call using the Aussie bonus scheme works out to be 20c a minute!
