Hi Guys,
I am located in Palmerston North (Metro, not rural). I recently switched ISPs to Snap (from my local Inspire Net) and I've noticed an observable decrease in speed. Unfortunately I hadn't done any speed tests before I switched. Can I have some feedback from those in the know about whether these speeds (especially the international ones) are considered acceptable or not? I'm not able to stream videos (except for YouTube) from most sites on the net. I did these all within a few minutes tonight.

Looks pretty good to me, while I'm not on Snap here's a couple I just did to the San Francisco site:

That's pretty average. My Telecom DSL connection here at home is getting 5.45Mbit/s down from that San Francisco server at the moment.

Did you have interleaving off on Inspire? From the latency in those speed tests looks like your line profile may have interleaving on currently.

Higher latency tends to have a negative effect on throughput.

Also try the San Jose (Smug Mug) server, just below SF on the US west cost, this is where the Southern Cross cable lands and there are probably better routes to that server than the SF one (Smug Mug is a large image storage provider like Flickr).

Have you changed your DNS to point to Snaps Servers? YouTube should be coming off their local google cache

I'm also noticing significantly slower speeds in general, uncached youtube vids are only watchable in 360p without constant buffering, also webpage loading times are noticeably longer, fairly concerning :/

the speed is an issue, i live 3 streets over from my exchange and i can see it out my back door, line of sight. im on adsl2+ and get about 9mbit or less and my upload is about 0.30.

i reckon that there is a upload speed issue and snap seems to have poor speed than other isp's

what i get now.

sync speeds was great next to 15mbit but now snap have no clue, say things are good at their end.

@Hads and tdgeek:... those are good speeds with Telecom. They really have picked up their game, huh? Why would my speeds on Snap be so much worse, given that I'm on an ADSL2 exchange and had better speed from my previous provider?

@Ragnor, I'm not sure about interleaving. I could ring and ask them. Would turning it off improve my speed?

Here is the result of the San Jose server.

As you see, it's even worse and I'm wondering if that might be because of Snaps $5 "All you can eat" between 1am and 7am deal.

@wjw, I'm using DHCP which is what Snap suggested. I get good performance out of popular YouTube videos that are obviously cached, but smaller videos lag to buffer even at the lowest quality setting (360p), and other video sites such as MegaUpload lag too.

I've noticed my average download speed from sites such as download.com reduce from an average of 500K-700K to an average of about 100K.

So is this just a matter of Snap not buying enough international bandwidth? Because when I rang them they commented that they only ever use about 70% of their capability in that regard.

When speed tests to local servers are fast an International ones are slow it certainly sounds like they don't have enough bandwidth.

I am still on ADSL1 (no upgrade till Dec this year), I get the same speedtest to San Jose as I do to Auckland (6.5Mbps down and 0.7 up), only difference is the Ping (50 to AKL, 188 to SJ).

That is on Telecom.

Sounds like Snap don't have enough international bandwidth.

i get just under 6 Mb/s to most American servers and have never had double figures so never use them, but i download from most sites at speeds at 1.6 Mb/s and have never had a problem with You tube. torrents or streaming sites , in fact most nights i can have torrents going at a good speed 5-600 Kb/s watch you tube with no buffering and my son is playing online on his lap top all at the same time, all with Snap so it's not everybody having problems.

Common sense is not as common as you think.
