Hi all

I'm looking to switch ISP, from a small company's naked DSL to either naked DSL or landline + DSL. Had two options so far, Orcon LL+40GB for $81 (Auckland, outside their network), or Telecom total home broadband LL+40GB for $105.

Price wise Orcon wins, but there are quite a few threads on peak time overseas performance issue with Orcon. So just trying to get some user experiences in the recent time. Thanks.

Peak time overseas latency and throughput are important, web browsing, youtube, wow and etc.

This made me laugh. Performance on Orcon at peak times, is and always will be, inconsistent and unreliable. When it's bad, Orcon goes silent here and in other places (even their support lines). When it's fixed, they partially admit to problems. History does not lie.

The average user cares less than those that have actual requirements like the OP here..

It's generally pretty good for real time traffic. Even p2p isn't bad during peak. Their LLU network is heaps better than Telecom Wholesale though.

Remember they have a local youtube cache which improves performance soooooo much.

Okie...

Talked to a solution specialist via email, she's helpful but I haven't got all the answers (that I like).

Said the insider (partner) deal was over after May - although the link is still up. And the current "best deal ever" is actually "worse". Still, land line + 30GB for $81 (AKL, outside + network) is not too bad (albeit 1 year contract). Kind of a bitter taste that a huge modern eastern suburb (Dannemora/Flat Bush) is not covered by them, and I'd other wise be paying just $71.

Our monthly data usage has been between 20 and 30GB for the last few months, if I'm aiming for 40GB then Orcon saves me just $9 a month compare with Telecom - with a chance that I'd regret being a cheap bastard...

Again, reference to a minimal group within Orcon. The key word is "consistency" which Orcon has still not proven exsists within their offerings as shown in many a thread here at geekzone. Over time I would hope consistency with performance becomes a good selling aspect for Orcon's services, but at this present time I'm not convinced personally (and yes, through experience also).

I was on Orcon+ until recently, am now on just a standard Orcon plan, havent had any issues on either - however Im not a heavy user anymore and dont tend to do anything that reqs low/consistent pings (ie: games) or requires high speed (downloading).
