2degrees has new data roaming rates for customers travelling to Australia:

Prepay –.95/MB

Pay Monthly $29, $39 Plans - .95/MB

Pay Monthly $59 and higher Plans - .50/MB

You have to give them credit for trying, but $950/GB is still pretty insane. It costs about $100/GB roaming to Vodafone in NZ, $20/GB on their network and $1/GB on a fixed line. No-one in their right mind would use more roaming data than they absolutely had to.

They buy the national roaming service from VFNZ but the international roaming service from Australian operators, so the better comparison would be with how much it costs for a VF Australia or 3 customer to roam onto another Australian operator.

I have been wondering why we dont get get cheap chinese knockoffs for Gillette blades etc?

Is that much off topic?

You get what you pay for; the knockoffs are crap. Mobile is a completly different delivery path than landline. Some people treat it as of right, it isn't...

It's not like there's any significant extra cost to supply data to roaming customers. The billing arrangements are already in place, data goes direct to the destination not via NZ, it's really a huge ripoff. I wouldn't be surprised if Australasian regulations appear in the next few years.

For years Telcos have had to base pricing models on Voice/txt services. I suspect the increase in smart phones has seen quite a shift in how folk use and roam (and most people don't use the hardware to its full ability) with data. Yet.

Of course the charging models will change... customers will make that happen.

But we'll still be paying too much for razors
