The past few weeks when the rains come down hard, our internet and phone become unuseable - DSL sync drops all the time (58 times this morning) and the phone has more static than usual. Usually I just wait a few hours and it all comes right again.... but this time its been continual.

Pretty certain itll be water getting into the line somewhere.....

Now, Im on an Orcon@Home plan (Not Orcon+) and have just noticed that we havent been paying for the "line insurance" @ $3 a month - what happens now ? I ring Orcon, tell them the issue, they send someone out and Ill be charged for all the work to get it sorted even tho the issue is not caused by us in the 1.5 months weve been at the address ?

If the problem is between the exchange and the demarc (i.e. your house) then they will fix it free, as its their network.
The wiring maintenance levy only covers wiring inside your house.

What you describe is fairly common, i had that problem at my parents house, chorus fixed it for free (arranged through our retailer), and i believe they reconnected the line at the street terminal. With the sorts of cable they use it is almost impossible to get water IN the line, its most likely a problem with a connection somewhere.

If you want to be sure, do an isolation test, and if you still get the problems then call orcon.

Obviously it depends WHERE the fault is? we had the same problem recently... Water was getting into the box out on the street. - it wasnt on our property so the fix was free to us...

I dont pay the wiring maintenance charge and personally dont believe its really neccessary unless you know the house wiring is crap...

My Personal view, dont pay the wiring fee, instead spend $100-200 and get a cabler in to check your wiring and install a central filter with a dedicated line to the modem, this will then give you the assurance (within limits) that your house wiring is not an issue, you can then call Orcon to get Chorus out to fix any issues with the assurance that the cabling on your side of the demarc is not an issue (within reason) and you wont be surprised with a bill.

Thanks guys, already done isolation test and tried 2 different routers overnight with same result.

Might try and find out where the line is coming into the house and make sure it isnt under water or anything like that but doubt it ;) Curse living on a hillside.....

I had the same problem and it happened when i was with Orcon (with Vodafone now).  Every time we had a storm the phone would die and the internet would drop it's speed to the likes of Dial up.  I was also worried that i would be charged when i finally made Orcon send a tech out.
When the tech came out he started at the cabinet and then to the street to then opening my 'phone box' on the outside of the house and saw that it was a birds nest in there, he chopped all the wires and cleaned it up and it has worked perfect ever since.
I was not charged as i believe that the problem has to be inside the border of your house to be charged.
If i was you i would demand a tech come out and check the wires.

I know this would be against their TOS, but what would they do if you say started paying for Line insurance and then "Got a fault" would they still fix it?

Tho ofcourse you would have to put up with the 58 disconnections every morning ;S

Sorry, yes, all resolved at no cost to me. The tech turned up the next day and found some exposed cabling at the roadside and repaired it.

Been great ever since, 17mbps connection that hasnt dropped once far as Ive noticed :)
