A friend wants to sign up for 2D but was told in the store in Wellington that SMS to Verizon are not supported. Since all her friends use Verizon she left unhappy.

This seems strange to me.  Clearly you can't roam on Verizon since they use CDMA but I can't see a reason why a SMS froma 2D phone couldn't reach a Verizon customer. Similarly a text back should also work I would hope.

Can 2D clarify this?

2degrees only have SMS interconnectivity agreement with a small number of networks. Salty has written a few extensive posts on here explaining how international SMS works.

Verizon aren't a listed network on the 2degrees website

I had seen that page before but couldn't find it this time around.

It's a shame that 2D can't get an agreement with the US's largest cellular carrier (well until AT&T buy Sprint).

I have to wonder why the international sms system is so bad. An international clearinghouse that every carrier peers with would be much much simpler.

My impression is if you need a reliable SMS service you should go with Vodafone. Telecom block some incoming txts from overseas.

Sending *to* Verizon should work, but I don't guarantee it. Receiving *from* Verizon is fairly likely to not work.

We're still a small fish in a tiny pond as far as Verizon are concerned.

You mean like a Tadpole in Lake Taupo... Because the ratio of a small fish in a tiny pond is pretty big.

Probably it would, but getting carriers to agree on various terms and work together would be an absolute nightmare.

Think how hard it is just to get the three MNOs (Voda, Telecom, 2Degrees) in this country to agree on something, and then multiply that by every carrier and every country out there. Never going to happen.

Er, yes. As long as you're comparing Lake Taupo to the Pacific. :-)

We do use an international clearing house, which is why I said that sending to Verizon would probably work. However, Verizon still have to do some work to allow replies to +6422 to go anywhere at all, even a clearing house, and if their customers don't complain about, then they won't do anything. They've got much bigger problems than that to take care of.

And then there's porting. I'm having a good day so far: please don't ask me about receiving messages to ported numbers.

I use Verizon Wireless and I can send and receive text messages to people on 2degrees (both +6422 and ported VFNZ).

I can also text & receive 2D customers with 022 numbers from Verizon, however haven't had any success with a ported 027 on 2D, likely due to the porting.

As a phone user, it is total BS that there is this inability to communicate between networks. You can make it work for phone calls and have done for dozerns of years even before SMS existed, yet you cant get it working for SMS? Yeah right.
