Hi guys!

Not sure if this should rather be in the andriod section....

I've got a LG P970 (Optimus Black) from 2degrees running 2.2.2 and I am missing the VPN settings in the menu. I know where the settings are supposed to be as my desire has it.

Thanks,

Yes, realize that - just curious if the OP meant one or the other.
If it helps any, my LG P990 running 2.2.2 still has that option in wireless / networks

APNs are all good they actually set themselves up as soon as a throw a 2degrees SIM card in and I have mobile internet and mms working fine.

I was just surprised that the phone did not support VPN's given that pretty much all other Android phones do and also as the phone is being given away with the $149 Business package plan. I've tried using the app VPN5 which seems to allow access to the VPN settings, however it doesn't actually work.

I'm hoping to get around it by setting up a Cisco VPN as there is an APP in the market which allows for that, hopefully it doesn't rely on whats missing from the LG P970 ROM.

Andriod + VPN has been a bad experience on a couple handsets for me.
Better option could be to go for a SSH connection - Currently using one reliably on the optimus

Bit of an update:

Finally got around to getting the Cisco IPsec VPN setup and an App for it on the Optimus black hoping that I'll be able to bypass the issue I was having with the PPTP VPN.

No dice, the Optimus blacks that we all got for work on the Business plan just won't VPN. Ironically it happily worked on my HTC Desire, but that's no surprise.

I'm amazed they are selling these smartphone as part of a business package when they can't even VPN. Surly a large % of smartphone users require VPN access for work etc?

I guess I'll have to look at rooting the phone... not sure what affect on the warranty that will have.

I installed 5VPN from the market on mine that made the Android VPN menu appear and allowed me to configure my connection. I still haven't tested it yet as I need to log in to my router to get my password but the fact the menu and configuration options show it's not actually removed from the OS.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Yeah I've installed that to configure the PPTP vpn, and the device does have the .apk for the vpn service but its just a no go. The fact that the menu was removed from the GUI suggests to me that LG knew VPN was an issue.

Well got the TXT from 2degrees today telling me that finally 2.3 Gingerbread was available for LG mobiles.

After the update ... still no VPN in 2.3.4 for the P970.

No SIP or multiple exchange accounts. It's no wonder it took them so long to launch Gingerbread, all their effot has been put into crippling it.

Surly the stock standard reference version supplied by google would have been better. The phone isn't even heavy so doesn't even make a good paper weight either.

Such high hopes met wither bitter disappointment, but its OK, they have plans to make 4.0 available in Q4...

As an aside our outsourcer delivers VPN via F5 firewall solution. The only certified VPN solution they provide only works on ICS (!) On certain Samsung Galaxy phones and tablets or you can download an alternate version that works if you have root access! Charming for business phones to be sure.

Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD.  https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd  PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.

I can imagine F5 meeting about the feature: "Let them root the phone if they want VPN. Who cares about security on a rooted phone anyway?"

Basically, if people are so crazy about security that they want to use a VPN, rooting shouldn't be an option.

+1

That would be one of the silliest decisions F5 made to be sure.
