Hi There!

They have just made VDSL available on my cabinet, woohoo. I don't see any VDSL plans currently for Orcon, do they have no plans to do this ? I heard they might offer shdsl or whatever it's called, but I am not sure how this works and what I need to do to get it?

Anyone have any information?

Dont think Orcon are planning on offering VDSL. Remember someone else asking once....

I take it this information is just gleened from the fact that your local whisper cabinet has had a VDSL2 upgrade, like 80% of the rest of the country, or is it some other direct Orcon info source.

If it is just as first mentioned then dont expect much to happen until ISPs can find a suitable business case to offer it to you.

The Telecom wholesale vdsl2 service is still in the soft launch stage where ISP's can trial and test the service.

There are already VDSL2 plans available from at least one major ISP, they've been available for a few months now. Most ISP's see no business case due to the cost (ie users unwilling to pay the price).

Well I would expect it to sit somewhere between a fibre/qos type connection and adsl2+ for pricing which is within my expectation and budget. I think I saw someone talking about $160 for 70GB a month

I know unleash offer them, I presume you are talking about Telstra, I didn't know they had formally started offering them to consumers.

Nope, not TelstraClear. They have offered VDSL2 for ~3 years over their own network.

You won't get anything that cheap.

How can 70GB per month even be an option on a 50Mbit/s connection?

1080p: If I don't have a need for any more then it's not a problem. 70GB is 20% over what I have used each month for the last 12 months on average, I don't see any more than this being required any time soon and I have a 20mbit connection now, so I could easily pull down 5 times that each month if I wished.

A quick google shows KiwiLink have some VDSL2 plans. I have never heard of them before though...

I would be interested to know what projected VDSL speeds I could expect if my dsl2 speeds are 19mbit now and I am 500m from the exchange.
