Hi Im thinking of changing from xnet fusion to orcon genius.

a few questions.

1 Any body had experince with xbox live? speed lag etc. Found that xnet seems to connect to the americans very well. Others on telstra and telcom tend to have more lag with the yanks

2 How flexible is the router/phone unit provided. yes it has file sharing and stuff but can you still port forward and DMZ? I dont want to be locked down by orcon trying to stop people that dont know what they are doing.

3 General speed over orcon. Have people been having good speeds latly?

Pros and cons i can see xnet vs orcon

Xnet a little more expnsiv with data cap. but calling is much cheaper. I dont do alot of national calls.

Prices would work out about the same however I would be getting alot more data with orcon. (and locked into 24months im not paying $10 a month rental for the equipment.)

oh yes. do you have an exact model or full user manual on the equipment that orcon send out so i can have a read through it via say pdf.

Bump!

I was looking at the Genius/Genius Lite plans this morning and wondering. Our term on Telecom is coming to an end soon and I could save something like $40/mth by moving to one of these.

BUT - if it doesn't NAT UDP properly (I'm looking at you, POS Thomson modems that Telecom supplies!) for gaming then it's of zero use to me.

So: anyone?

It does have DMZ/port forwarding support.

Ive been on Orcon (Orcon+ before I moved and on Genius for jsut over a week now) for the last few months, and had no issues, however Im not a big downloader etc so long as my emails, browsing and occasional PS3 gaming runs fine, Im happy.

The Genius is based on the BoB routers from iiNet in Australia - the manual you get with the unit from Orcon, only covers installation, not anything technical. They may have a "tech" manual but youd have to ask.

Having said that, the interface is very self explanatory and if you don't know what a certain area pertains to, you probably shouldn't be in there in the first place.

Not sure about the OP, but I'm perfectly happy manually setting up NATs, DMZs and port forwards etc. However I certainly don't want to go to the hassle of switching over only to find that refuses to properly NAT UDP, like some others I have played with, and therefore that most online games don't work. Basically I'm just hoping that someone who *does* regularly online game will reply to say they've done it and it works fine. :-)

Googling for "iinet bob router +steam" turns up some results that imply it works fine, such as this Steam Forum post. I guess that means I'm ok to switch once the Telecom term runs out.

Thanks. Im a computer tech by living so understand the ins and outs of routers. Thats why i dont like being locked out of stuff

Thanks thing to chew over. fear was they were giving out locked down routers such as xtra are with the thomson wich are prety much usless.

The only thing that is locked down, is the SIP/VOIP settings. Everything else is changeable.

cool. thats the same as xnet. you realy dont want people playing with that stuff regardless. could cause all sorts of problems.

I set my Genius up last week and no problem with the Nating etc. Only thing I could see that was odd was that I could not set up a DHCP address based on a MAC address, I maybe missing something. It is possible to set up VLAN,s though so that could be interesting.

In theory yes. But in practice, the modem is leased to you as part of the contract with Orcon. When you cancel your orcon account, its required to be returned.
