I have an 8150 android.

2Deg just txt me the other day to say I've run out of credit to top up my national data pack.  It also didn't tell me that I'm now using pay as you go data... so I assume the sim is totally out of credit... I haven't looked.

However the phone keeps dropping wifi and not reconnecting automatically.

Has anyone else seen this with an 8150 or android?  ie, if you have no data credit then other aspects of the phone also don't work?

Of course this is not big issue, because to fix it all I need to do is just to whack a top up on it...  but it was kind of interesting to think that I'm tied to having to pay a mobile provider to use the phone features - if you can see the principle here?  (not that, that's a big issue either, it just struck me as interesting).

Interesting.  Ya I've had a few little gremlins with this 8150.  It also doesn't like moving from 2d to vf roaming and back again.  Gets all upset and normally needs a reboot.

Don't get me wrong... I fully accept when you pay $150 for a phone with this many features, there's a good chance that stuff it's going to be perfect.

For once I'm not complaining, just quite interested in how others have found it and if there are any suggestions to improve it.

Does the wifi disconnection happen just when the screen turns off by any chance? If so it may be something to do with the wifi sleep policy. If you go to wireless and networks>wifi settings>advanced>wifi sleep policy you can set it to "never".

This may just be a gingerbread thing though, I can't remember if it's on 2.2

Nice spot! :) , but no :( .  I didn't even know that screen existed, but it was set to 'never'.

I also just checked the phone, which has been sitting in screen off mode for an hour or so and it's still connected.

Think it might just be your phone - I have an IDEOS U8150 and I have no wifi issues, no roaming issues, all on the standard Android 2.2 ROM.

I know it doesn't help your situation, but I don't think it's an issue with *all* 8150's.

Maybe it's something specific to your wifi access point? Because my phone *sometimes* struggles to see my D-Link which is less than 5 metres away without having to turn off and on wifi, but it sees the Netgear access point 20m+ away no sweat.
