Hi,

I moved to 2degrees some time ago - great, but only one issue.

I frequently work at a site (NE edge of ChCh) where I cannot make/receive calls. As I am often lone working, coverage is an issue.

The site is in the middle of a couple of 2degree towers, but the 2deg signal blocked (forest area) until I climb up a nearby hill. On site I can get a Vodafone signal (the phone will allow me to make Emergency calls only) and when I was with Vodafone I could make calls OK on site. Other people don't have problems with Vodafone or Telecom on site. It is obvious the VF cell towers are telling me to bugger off as they are in a 2Deg area and will not switch to roaming. Roaming works fine in other places.

Is there anything that can be done about this?

yes, you can switch to a network that has coverage in the area.

alternatively, lobby 2degrees to put up a new celltower.

Nope. If I manually switch to the VF network (it should auto switch anyway) I am only allowed to make Emergency calls.

I wish! There is a roaming agreement which says VF takes over in non-2deg areas. This is obviously a bit of a grey area where we have a 2deg area, but a signal that is not strong enough.

Have you tried locking it to the 2degrees network and did this make any difference? Has it always been an issue at this spot?

Please can you PM your 2? number and exact location where this happens.

When on site, there is no 2deg signal to lock onto (well normally, but it does come and go) until I get up in height. It has always been an issue at this site, but only with 2deg.

sounds like you are not within a roaming area, but still don't have 2Deg coverage. No telco has 100% coverage even in areas where they are supposed to have coverage. Not so much a grey area as simply unlucky for you.

if you know you can get voda or xt signal then you should probably sign up with one of them.

Change to XT is your best option.

It seems logical that if there's no coverage at a location you need then you should switch to a provider that does have coverage.

I'm pretty sure I've seen 2Degrees help others out who have been in similar situations. So persevere with them and see if they can give you a solution...

Hi all, I'm quite happy at giving 2Deg a go at sorting the problem, as they are by far the best mobile company that I've dealt with so far.

SteveON & Nonprayingmantis. Obviously changing provider is an option, but this site is the only place I have an issue. XT is out of the question as other sites I work on only have VF coverage, and believe me, it was not just price that convinced me to change to 2Deg!

So, I'll give 2Deg some time to see if something can be done.

I get a similar issue in Orewa. I can get unreliable 2D coverage, so my phone seems "reluctant" to switch over to the better VF signal. End result is that often the phone appears to have no signal. Making it rescan by toggling flight mode usually kicks it onto the VF network.

Like the OP, I have no intention of switching onto another network though

there is no reason for your phone to switch to vodafone. 2degrees roaming agreement only works in the area where 2degrees has no coverage at all.

I suspect Orewa is getting towards the northern limit of the 2deg zone. If shk292 is near "the line" then geography etc will have an effect on whether roaming kicks in or not.

In Orewa you can get some signal due to reflection off water. In our case, just north of Puhoi, it's because of altitude (can just see a signal from Albany).

I'm sure we're right on the edge, some parts of the house it works, others it roams onto VF. It's just the switching between that sometimes isn't good
