Is anyone having problems with websites hosted on Iserve showing slow loading times and page loads timing out?  We've had/having problems for a while now and it seems a hard nut to crack so I'm trying to see if I can build a bigger picture.  Some pages are take 2.5 minutes which normally take less than 3 seconds over a broadband connection.  It seems to affect customers who's ISPs are Orcon and Xtra.  HTTP uploading can be affected.  Running wireshark tests seem inconclusive and although the techies at Iserve can see that they can't 'see' me when trying tests, they can't replicate the problem internally.  Is anyone else experiencing the same issue? Thanks.

Are they static websites, or ones off databases. Personally I haven't had trouble with static websites, but have noticed that database ones are a big laggy recently.

Hi, it's happening on both.  Both are timing out with the database driven ones also timing out during http uploads.  Some static pages taking 2.5 minutes to load or the browser just timing out.

Yup I'm getting the same problem. Both static and database driven. I'm on Vodafone for my ISP.

Hi, thanks for your reply.  Is your vodafone connection a land line or mobile system?  Have you had any joy or suggestions with Iserve's/Orcon's response?  Cheers.

It's a land line.

I haven't contacted iServe / Orcon about it yet because it seems to come and go for me (it's happening right now though!) and none of my clients have complained about it yet.

Their Hosting Management Console always works fine, so I guess that's separate from their hosted sites.

I wondered if it was server based, you know how iServe hosted sites can be on different servers (www2, www3, etc). But as I type this I have a site sitting on www2 that is failing and other sites that are also on www2 are working fine.

I can't see any pattern in which sites have problems and which don't.

Yes, finding a pattern seems to be a problem.  We can be talking to a client who is having the problem where the page is taking 2.5 minutes to load (connecting with Xtra) whereas we can see the same page loading in 3 seconds.  We can both see e.g. Stuff loading at the same speed.  Then the situation reverses a couple of hours later. It's happening across the country and at least three different ISP connections.  Very frustrating.

While it was happening to me this morning (it's back to normal right now) I did a tracert to the same site that wasn't loading in my browser and it went through just fine with normal timings.

When the pages don't load in my browser I get a browser timeout after about 3 minutes.  Tried in multiple browsers.

Yes, it's certainly not browser dependent.  I've even been talking to an Iserve engineer while trying to get to a site and he can't see the request, yet I click on another and it comes up immediately.  It's not ISP dependent either.  They're trying to sort it but they don't know what the problem is.  Do you run wireshark at all?

No Wireshark, sorry.

But I do occasionally use AnalogX's PacketMon for when I want to snoop on traffic.

Unfortunately the one site that I often have problems with is working ok at the moment.

I had a client who submitted an urgent call to me in the weekend because their iserve hosted website wasn't working, and wasn't since friday, and they had Newspaper adverts in the weekend advertising the site. It was however loading fine for me, I believe they were using either vodafone or telstra as their ISP. Anyway they said it was working on sunday, so it sounds like it coul dbe the same problem.
I am not happy with iserves/orcons online support at the moment. The last ticket I submitted, it took 12 days to get a reply, and even then the reply was incorrect and didn't answer the question.

Thanks, will be interested if you can pin anything down. Do you know what server the site you're having problems with is on please?

Hi, thanks for replying. Yes that sounds exactly like the problem and is very frustrating. Clients can get to other websites e.g. Stuff, Google, BBC so their connection is okay. Do you know which server this site is on please and what ISP your user is using? It is annoying when an urgent call isn't treated as urgent by Orcon. Thanks.

In my case it was the server www3.iserve.net.nz

How many sites are you hosting? May be worth looking at getting a VPS/Dedicated Server where you have better control over shared hosting which as you can see is a bit hit and miss

I have been using iserve for many years, and generally it is very reliable, and is more than suitable for most websites, so I don't think that would be needed. Plus I believe iserves hosting is clustered, so it isn't your cheap average single server shared hosting.
VPS tends to be more expensive, and in general requires more server knowledge than shared hosting. Of course it does give more control, but many people don't want that.
