<bump>

Eighteen months down the track from this - http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?ForumId=85&TopicId=58582&page_no=1

Does anyone know if 2D have made any tangible progess in negotiating a two way agreement with Vodafone Ireland/UK?

"At the moment there is an issue with text messages not being delivered from Vodafone in Ireland and the UK to 2degrees customers. Texts are being delivered to them ok but as we do not have an agreement they are not sending the replies onto our customers."

I'm wondering whether the large number of overseas visitors here at the moment might have preempted some kind of resolution? Or maybe it's been resolved, I don't know.

Well, it's better than it was in some cases. But that's about as specific as I can get. :-) The actual problem - that you need to negotiate with individual telcos, complicated by number portability - remains. In the case of Vodafone Group there is now an international signaling hub to which all other (i.e. non-Vodafone) carriers have to connect to in order to reach Vodafone carriers.

That helps in some cases but the individual Vodafone Operating Companies are still allowed to demand individual commercial agreements yada yada long story short some of them are still hard to deal with.

Also, number portability: great idea, shame 3GPP never mandated a standard method for implementing it that would guarantee the problems would go away.

Just for reference, I have just completed specifying the set of test cases for a new (local - so don't get your hopes up) NP system for SMS that will be going in shortly. There are 117 cases, and that *only* covers direct integration with 2degrees, Vodafone and Telecom - there are no test cases in there for the MVNOs.

If I'm concerned with this issue and I test being sent an SMS from the UK to my 021 ported 2degrees phone and it works, can I be relatively confident that it will work consistently (from that particular number) and to other 021 ported 2 degrees phones too? Or is there more to it than that?

Alas, if only it were that easy. Put it this way: the last few times I needed to test it it worked fine for me with both an 022 and a ported-in 021 number from Vodafone UK. Nevertheless it can and does fail for others, and sometimes not even consistently.

For example, if the UK customer complains loudly enough to their carrier then said carrier may setup routing specifically to make that number work. But that won't help any other customer of that UK carrier.

It's a lot better than it used to be for the UK, though it would pay to check with the specific numbers you're going to use, if it's really important.

It's the only thing stopping my mother-in-law switching, so I'll monitor this issue closely.

We recently transferred our 021 numbers from Vodafone NZ to 2degrees. We weren't aware of issues with regard to receiving SMS from Vodafone Ireland. It became fairly noticeable by second week, due to no replies coming form texts I sent to Ireland. Quick search of the forum brought up DMs old post. I spoke to 2degrees customer care who refereed me to website and also mentioned a warning when you sign up. Pity they don't clarify with saying which operators you may have problems with. I have emailed 2degrees to seek a further update and to express my disappointment no reply yet. Looks like we will have to return to Vodafone if we want to hang on to our numbers. Not sure if there is any alternative. IS this a problem if you change your number to 2degrees prefix ?

Regrettably, it can be, yes. And your suggestion solution - returning to your original provider - is precisely why there is little incentive for overseas Vodafone OpCos to assist us in doing something about it.
