I was hoping somebody could clarify the rules about using mobile broadband out of zone because I find the information on 2degrees website confusing.

having just brought a Android we put a mobile Broadband pack on it. I had always understood this worked in broadband zones and would be locked out unless you texted unlock to 233. This seemed to born out by a reference to text unlock on 233.

when we did our first trip out of zone a text came in saying that you were moving out of broadband zone and would be charged 50c a MB I had not texted unlock 233.

On rechecking the website I find references to both having to text unlock 233 to use national Data and moving to a straight charging system.

When I rang 202 they gave me an answer which i didn't fully understand that Data on Android couldn't be fully locked.

When you buy a broadband pack for the first time, it should lock data such that you cannot pay 50c/MB for out-of-zone usage. While locked, you can only use national data out of zone. If you text unlock to 233 then you will also be able to pay for out-of-canopy data with with cash.

Pay monthly plan data is national data.

Thanks Salty. Obviously when I brought the Datazone pack the default lock setting didn't apply and I got charged. Not a major as I saw the text and watched it closely. Anyway have now texted lock to 233 and the lock seems to be working.

Guess I better get busy and get to my local 2 degrees shop this week to a $59.00 dollar plan while the 1 Gb of national Data is still available

I think I've got a similar issue,

I use a Vodafone mifi for data with a 2degrees sim in it.

I have it set via the android 2degrees app to not allow out of zone roaming for the 12GB zone pack I'm using. So I was a little surprised to get this text today:

2degrees alert: You're outside our Zones so are being charged std data rates of 50c/MB. For better value get a 1GB NZ Data Pack - text 'buy 1GB' to 233

So I just checked what apn is set in the mifi, it happens to be the internet.telecom.co.nz one from when I last had a Telecom SIM in it.

I'm not overly worried about the 70c of credit that has been used, but would like to kerb this happening in the future.

Is there a reliable way of stopping out of zone casual data usage?
