Hi there,

We are currently using Snap as our ISP for connectivity to 2talk for VoIP.
Just wondering if anyone using CallPlus as their ISP would be able to run a traceroute to 2talk, interested in seeing if it is any less hops through CallPlus than through Snap.

I'm probably being pedantic but we can't get VDSL leaving the only option of ADSL2+, and can't find anyone doing EUBA 180Kbps yet so trying to make the most of what we've got.

Tracing route to 2talk.co.nz [202.180.76.182] over a maximum of 30 hops:1    <1 ms    <1 ms    <1 ms  192.168.1.3

4    24 ms    24 ms    24 ms  24.17.69.111.static.snap.net.nz [111.69.17.24]

8    41 ms    42 ms    41 ms  fep8.2talk.co.nz [202.180.76.182]

Cheers

Thanks for that, so 2 less hops... might have to get a CallPlus business connection and have a go

Why swap ISP's for 2 hops? Unless Snap have congestion on their own backhaul to APE (highly unlikely) it's not going to make any difference whatsoever.

Sucks you can't get VDSL. How many lines are you running? Thought about using something like g.729 which is more bandwidth efficient?

Yeah good point - I didn't explain myself very well, we would actually be keeping our Snap connection, just wanting to change from Xnet for our secondary connection so CallPlus might be a good option there.
So not just for 2 hops

Thankfully only average 2 calls, occasionally might use up to 4. We have a few analog phones over g729 but in testing our Cisco phones really work best on g711 and it is worth the better average call quality for the occasional garbled voice.

That is a mean fibre connection, think it will be a while before we can get that here unfortunately!

When I say we can't get VDSL, we do actually have it at the moment but it is going worse than ADSL. Snap are doing some troubleshooting, might be interference from our other connections or a bad line somewhere

As I understand, slingshot and 2talk are sister companies, both owned in a large part by Dick Malcom - the estranged husband of Annette Presley who fronted the slingshot TV commercials for a few years.

It would not surprise me if they are in the same building.

Edit: Companies office tells me that 2talk limited has its registered office in the Call Plus Business Centre on symonds street in auckland.

I have a dedicated internet connection through another isp for my rural network, but i keep a slingshot dsl connection on for my own personal use, and specifically because the 2talk line is super reliable through it.

i have a callplus SIP trunk, and last time i tried to call a 2talk number i got the message "too many hops".... i logged a call, but havent gotten around to finding out if the issue was fixed yet - apparently seemed to be some sort of loop going on. being on the same network doesnt always mean 'better' or 'more reliable' ;P

Do your Cisco phones support other codecs apart from g.729 and g.711, such as G.722 which 2talk might support as well. I don't think a couple less hops will make much difference, but minimising the size of each VoIP packet and setting the phones to 1 frame per packet could very well improve it. I suspect the problem is caused by the fact that telecom queues all your ADSL traffic without any priority, so check whether your router has QoS priority settings too.

Time to find a new industry!

For some reason my dodgey routing and stuff makes traceroutes not work, but heres what I get pinging 2talk out via the slingshot connection

Here is what is visible with the trace, it doesnt show replies from things that arent routed out the slingshot connection so thats why it has the missing hops

Far out.. Some of you have low latency! Makes our fibre look like pants!  (pacific.net in blenheim, routing through fx networks)

even if you went at the raw speed of light, you'd still be a few milliseconds slower - auckland-auckland is a bit closer than auckland-blenheim :)

once you add a few routers and tranceivers in the middle, it gets slower

Just wanted to update anyone who is interested, we switched from Snap to CallPlus for our dedicated VoIP ADSL2+ connection and have found the service to be noticably more reliable (haven't noticed any outages since the switch). Still using Snap for our main internet connection happily though.
