So there was a cabling guy doing work outside my house about 2 months ago. No problems, the internet was on and off all day while he was doing it, but it was all back to normal when he left.

2 weeks ago, the internet started slowing down. A lot. Youtube is now unwatchable in anything but 240p, Google searches take a minute, Downloading from sourcforge is maximum 30KB/s, any other site is maxing out at 80kb/s, its gotten to the point where when someone else on the network is playing an online game, noone else can use the internet at all.

The only thing which still works is torrents. I tried an ubuntu 11.04 torrent an I was getting 300kB/s, (normally 1.3MBps) so torrents are a lot faster than anything else, but still slow as hell.

I called SNAP and they asked me to do a few traceroutes to different site. I sent them a whole lot of different ones, and my speedtest results (which are also an exception, its still telling me 8-9Mbps) and the reply I got was

"There is a problem with our youtube/google upstream provider"
But this doesnt explain that EVERY site on the entire internet is now 1/4 or 1/5 or the speed it was 3 weeks ago. I said that I thought it might be my router, which is quite old, but the guy that i spoke to said it is unlikely to be that. SNAP seems to be ignoring my emails about this now, and I am sort of at my wits end.

Could it be my router? Is anyone else experiencing slow speeds with snap? anyone have any suggestions as to what i could do to try fix it?

also i have been doing all my tests from an Archbang live cd, to eliminate any softwre issues.

DSL sync stats and attenuation?

And are you using SNAP's DNS servers?

yip. like within a few hours. I tried everything. even resorted to updating firmware on my router. Snap kept saying the problem was my hardware. but when i disabled the addon. bingo everything back to normal. have not enabled it since

Seems like you are locked into ADSL1, have you tried forcing ADSL2+ in your modem settings? This will allow you to sync higher.

Yep with 2.5dB attenuation you should be seeing 18Mb/s or so, but for whatever reason your modem has locked to ADSL1 (G.DMT) which puts approx 10Mb/s limit on things, suggest you sort that bit out. If the modem is set to Auto or multimode yet pulled itself back to G.DMT then that could very well be line stubs due to poor house wiring.

Well my issue at the moment is that I am not even getting 1Mbps speeds.

How old is your modem, what is it, looks like it does not do ADSL2+

That must be a ADSL1 modem only. Might be worth getting another modem which is ADSL2+ compatible so you can get the full benefit of ADSL2+. Can't say that will fix your download speeds through snap's network though.

It is an ASUS AAM6030. I will pick up a new modem and try that.
