I think the lack of comments in the first three hours after this post sums up it all...

Oh Groan!.... if their was something that defines "vaporware" and a glorious waste of time, energy and taxpayers cash, this is it.

Why don't they buy the 025 gear! It would mean they have a nationwide network instantly! (I am aware it's not a technical possibility but it still sounds good!)

Do these guys even have freq allocation?

How long is it going to be before we see Woosh IPWireless phones?  That would deliver you a third mobile network in a number of areas.

Wireless gear is getting cheaper and cheaper.  With the concentration of wifi, how long is it going to be before we see more use of wifi phones replacing mobile?  A growing number of cafes in my area are giving it away for free now, Telecom is giving it away for free.

I'm now seeing business users conducting business from cafe tables with laptops and latte.

Cheers  Don

Yes Econet do have spectrum and they have consent and MED allocations for 10 sites in the Auckland CBD. They even gloated about airfreighted their gear to NZ because they were in such a hurry to deploy it but a few months on from that I've heard that not a single piece of equipment has yet been installed.

Woosh IPWireless phones would be a waste of time. IPWireless even created clam shall mobile phone to operate but it would be a waste of time in NZ - Woosh's coverage is too poor to offer decent coverage, the handovers are hopeless, and there would be no roaming onto any existing networks so you'd really be limited to using it as a cordless phone at home.

I agree Wireless is the future. It's just that neither Econet or Woosh will be a significant player! The $million question is whether WiMAX really can deliver what it promises. If it can the future is going to be very exciting. If it's like WCDMA and the hype exceeded the products real life capabilities then I can't see any significant changes occuring for quite a few years yet.

I think the best option (currently) would be what Sprint is doing, and Telecom New Zealand might be thinking of doing: CDMA EVDO Rev 0 for voice and cellular data, with WiMax for broadband.

WCDMA, as it is deployed here in New Zealand (2100MHz) is just too "weak" to get into the market as a true landline broadband replacement.
